Lemont Block Collective Featured Artists WeekendThe Lemont Block Collective, 150 Maine Street in downtown Brunswick, will feature three local artists during an open house weekend, September 21 through 24. Underwater photographer Jonathan Lavan, Driftwood artist Chris Toy, and Tiffany Method glass artist Deborah J. Ripley are each Collective members and Mid Coast residents. The Lemont Block Collective is an artist-run gallery featuring work from 23 Maine-based artists and makers. Begun as a pop-up in the Fall of 2020 by Cleo Vauban, in the newly renovated Lemont Block building, the Collective remains too successful to close. This September event launches the “Featured Artist Weekend” series of monthly spotlights on Collective artists.
On the 21st, naturalist, educator, and underwater photographer Jonathan Lavan will be the keynote speaker, introducing the audience to underwater photography and the world travel associated with it, in words and pictures. His work is on display at the Collective in multiple formats. The presentation will begin at approximately 5:30pm.
Retired educator Chris Toy will host on the evening of the 21st. Many will know Chris as an accomplished chef and cooking instructor, or perhaps as an international educational consultant, or as a Maine Guide. At the Collective, his mesmerizing mobiles and ‘stabiles’ made of driftwood, shells and other found materials are contemplative, beautiful and popular.
Former Community Health Educator Deborah J. Ripley turned to stained glass as a “bucket-list” hobby, late in life. Working with her hands, creating, and watching art come to life brought great joy and pleasure. She soon discovered an aptitude for the work and has continued pushing her own boundaries in 2- and 3-dimensional glass projects, expanding her skill set in both abstract and representational directions. On a sunny morning, the Collective is a-light with the beautiful results, in our east-facing windows.
Join us at the Lemont Block Collective, on Thursday, September 21, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and meet these Maine artists. The Featured Artist Weekend continues through 4pm Sunday the 24th, with expanded displays by these artists and increased access to the artists themselves.
