Music in April is THE signature fundraiser for People Plus. It enables us to serve over 1300 People Plus members who represent an ever-increasing population of retirees and elders on the Mid Coast. This non-profit could NOT do it without the income from Music in April – which has become a signature event in our community. The Center has raised over $650,000 from the event over the last 20 years. These last few years have demonstrated exactly how vital People Plus is to the lives of the older adult populations. In addition to hundreds of classes, clubs and meals held safely at the Center, we made over four thousand deliveries of groceries, food pantry boxes, meals and prescriptions – and provided over 30,000 miles of transportation – just last year, keeping seniors safe!

People Plus serves the greater Brunswick community by offering a variety of activities to support engaged, healthy and independent lives for older adults, as well as hosting the Teen Center where young people can meet safely to explore creative outlets, eat a healthy meal, and develop into well-rounded adults. People Plus also provides outreach and transportation services, and offers many volunteer opportunities.

People Plus wishes to thank Lead Sponsors Coastal Landing Retirement Community, Mid Coast-Parkview Health Maine Health, Bill Dodge Auto Group, Rusty Lantern Market, Bowdoin College, Priority Real Estate Group, Bangor Savings Bank, Bath Savings Institution, and Maine State Credit Union. Also sponsors Brackett Funeral Home, Off Their Rockers, Spectrum Generations, Norway Savings Bank, Maine State Music Theatre, Goodwin Motor Group, The Times Record, Darling’s Ford, Dead River Company, Kennebec Savings Bank, The Highlands, Thornton Oaks, Avita of Brunswick/Sunnybrook, Atlantic Federal Credit Union, Flight Deck Brewing, Brunswick Instant Print, Maine Community Bank, Insurance and Retirement Solutions, Developers Collaborative, Edward Jones Brunswick & Topsham, and Topsham Tractor & Manchester Motors.

Earth Day Clean Up! 04/22/23 at 9:30 am to 11:30 am

Earth Day Clean Up!

Join Cathance River Education Alliance and Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust for an Earth Day Clean Up!  This year, we’re focusing on areas near our offices at Brunswick Landing that are within the Mare Brook watershed (which occupies a large area of Brunswick). Join us as we don garbage bags and gloves for our mission to clean up lightly traveled (yet sadly, not devoid of trash) roadsides and other areas this Earth Day!

We’ll stage our effort from the deck next to our office, then send people out to nearby areas (some walkable, some a short drive or bike ride) where a team leader will direct you. You can de-litter for as long as you wish/are able, then you’ll bring the trash back to our staging area. We encourage people to bring gloves if you have them, but we will have nitrile gloves (including child-sized) on hand. If you have large animal feed or other bags that can be repurposed as trash bags, please bring them! We love re-use!

Location: 179 Neptune Dr. – Brunswick Landing

Parking: large lot across the street from our office address above.

Time: 9:30am – 11:30am

Come Prepared! Bring re-usable garden gloves (we’ll have nitrile gloves on hand). Wear sturdy shoes the ground will be muddy, and clothing you don’t mind searching for trash in! Trash bags will be provided.

All ages welcome – children must be supervised by an adult caregiver.

Registration is requested! Register below and be sure to list the number of people in your group. If we need to reschedule due to weather or send additional details about the event this will be communicated via email to registered groups/participants.

Site Leaders Wanted – Bring your group of friends and clean up your own site together! Note in your registration if you’d like to be a site leader for our clean up missions.

REGISTER HERE

Let’s get microplastics and waste out of natural areas, out of streams, and away from nature’s creatures. Families and children welcome! Give the children in your life a chance to contribute to their community and perhaps build some good habits around how to be a good caretaker of the natural world.

We’ll have light refreshments on hand to thank you for your efforts when you’re done!

We have Free CREA t-shirts to give to the first 20 volunteers who sign-up, so save your spot today!

Poetry Express Performance 04/22/23 at 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Poetry Express Performance

Poetry Express Performance
Pieces of Resistance

For National Poetry Month, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick is exploring the way that poetry is used in resistance. How have you resisted the soul-destroying divisiveness of our world? Resisted apathy and pessimism? Resisted racism and capitalism and the status quo? We invite those inspired by resistance to join us for a night of poems and perspectives.

UUCB has collaborated with the Maine Humanities Council to offer their Poetry Express Program. The mission of Poetry Express is to connect communities through poetry and performance as a catalyst for deeper engagement with poetry. Seven local participants were selected to take part in two workshops at the UU Church with Portland Poet Laureate, Maya Williams, who guided them in writing and performing their own poems. On Saturday, April 22 at 6 pm, The Poetry Express Program culminates with participants putting on a performance of their poetry at the Unitarian Church of Brunswick.

Maya Williams (ey/they/she) is a Black Mixed Race queer nonbinary person, suicide survivor, and poet residing in Portland, Maine. They currently serve as MaineTransNet’s Sexual Assault Program Coordinator, where they develop peer support groups for trans survivors and educational material on trauma informed trans competency for advocates. They also serve as co-host of the video series Dying/Laughing, which analyzes the representation of suicide and mental health in TV and film. Maya has published poetry in glitterMOBOcculumThe Portland Press Herald, Littoral Books, FreezeRay, and more.

The participants in the Poetry Express workshop were Arrow Andrews, Sam Caswell, Jane Danielson, Peg Dunstan, Michael Greene, Jazmyne Peebles, Libby Riggs. The theme of their poetry is “resistance.”  This event is free and open to the public.
