September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. ? Root Rind & Petal will be donating proceeds from your purchases this month to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital to benefit all the Superheroes and families facing life threatening illness right here in Maine. We were fortunate to receive exceptional care @BBCH for Nathan who is 10 now, and 5 years in remission from Ewings Sarcoma. The “roots” of Root Rind & Petal began 5 years ago, sharing the tools and methods we used through Nathan’s journey. Lisa & Scott Cylinder, collaborative studio Art Jewelers for 33 years, are teaching a basic/intermediate Jewelry Class in their Brunswick studio, “the Wedge.” Starting September 7th and running for 8 consecutive Tuesday evenings, the Cylinders will be teaching the basic knowledge of metals and jewelry making. The Wedge is Lisa & Scott Cylinder’s Studio and teaching space located in Fort Andross in Brunswick, ME. Lisa & Scott have been collaborative jewelry artiste for the past 33 years and have exhibited extensively, both nationally and internationally. They bring extensive knowledge and experiences to their classroom.

Each Spring and Fall, they will be offering 8 week beginner jewelry/metals classes to learn the basic skills of Art Jewelry making. Students with experience are welcome to sign up to brush up on and improve their skill sets. The classes are limited to 4 students per session for a rich, personalized experience. Arctic Museum Open by Reservation!

We are excited to announce that beginning September 7, 2021, the Arctic Museum galleries will be open Tuesday-Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and a reservation is required.

  • To make a reservation to view the museum’s exhibits, please email or call James Tanzer, the museum’s outreach coordinator, at least two working days before the time you want to visit. He can be reached at pmam@bowdoin.edu or by calling 207-725-3416.
  • A proof of vaccination is required of all visitors. Please follow the directions on this link to upload your vaccination card to the CLEAR app and get a health pass.
  • It takes at least 24 hours for the CLEAR app to verify your vaccination card, so you should upload information at least 24 hours before your visit to be sure you have a green health pass when you visit.
  • If you do not want to use the CLEAR app, please arrive ready to show us your vaccination card [photos of the front and back of the card will suffice] and a valid federal or state ID.
  • Because of staffing schedules, we regret that drop-ins cannot be accommodated.
  • We are not able to accommodate large outside groups or provide tours of the exhibits.
  • Museum visitors must wear masks at all times.
  • Bowdoin College faculty, staff and students should make a reservation and arrive with your college ID.

Joshua L. Chamberlain Legacy Lecture

Don’t miss Pejepscot History Center’s FIRST Annual Chamberlain Legacy Lecture, “Who shall tell what is past and what survives?”: Why Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain Still Matters” given by Kanisorn “Kid” Wongsrichanalai, Ph.D., Director of Research at Massachusetts Historical Society, and alumnus of Bowdoin College. on September 10.

This is a Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum Fundraiser and 193rd birthday celebration for the General. There will be cake AND a recorded personal welcome by filmmaker KEN BURNS!

Dr. Wongsrichanalai’s address will touch on themes directly related to the mission of the Chamberlain Legacy Lecture: how the experiences, events, disciplines, and ideas of Joshua Chamberlain continue to resonate in the world.

“I am deeply honored and humbled,” says Dr. Wongsrichanalai. “I became an historian because of Joshua Chamberlain. I went to Bowdoin because of Joshua Chamberlain. To be asked to deliver the inaugural Chamberlain Legacy Lecture is truly a profound honor.”

Dr. Wongsrichanalai is the author of Northern Character: College-educated New Englanders, Honor, Nationalism, and Leadership in the Civil War Era and co-editor of So Conceived and So Dedicated: Intellectual Life in the Civil War-era North. He earned his B.A. from Bowdoin College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.

A dessert reception follows the keynote. Tours at the Chamberlain Museum the weekend of the lecture are free. A walking tour of “Chamberlain’s Bowdoin,” conducted by Bowdoin College historian John Cross, takes place on Sunday, September 12 at 1:30. Tickets for this event support the Chamberlain Museum. $25 General Admission, $15 PHC Member, $10 Student/Military/Veteran.
