In this two-hour zine making workshop, participants will get a basic overview of what a zine is and will have time to create their own one-page zine using simple folding and cutting techniques. Basic materials such as paper, scissors, glue sticks, and coloring utensils will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring any special supplies they might want to use such as collaging materials, thermal printers, stickers, and other crafting supplies. Laptops are welcome for those who may want to create digital layouts to be printed at another time. Jessica will have a variety of zines from her personal collection to share as inspiration for one-page zines and beyond. A few test prints of Flannel Magazine will be raffled off at the end of class.

Based in southern Maine, Jessica Harvey is a zine maker, photographer, gardening and house plant enthusiast, aspiring outdoorist, and proud public elementary school teacher. She is known for her plant and gardening zine, Heavy Petal, and local art and culture zine, Flannel Magazine (2008-2012). She found her way into photography and zine making as a young teen through local hardcore and metal shows around Maine and New England. Documenting and connecting with her musical community over the past two decades has shaped her life and connection to art. In her professional work as a classroom teacher, her mission is to build joyful, safe, and inclusive space for kids to think and grow into people who believe in themselves and their ability to influence and change the world for better.
