This year, PHC volunteer and local history enthusiast Jym St. Pierre will lead a Jane’s walk beginning at our headquarters at 159 Park Row at 1pm. Anyone can join!
The topic of this year’s tour is: The Brunswick Mall at 200
In June, 1823, three local men conveyed by deed real estate that included the Mall area stretching from Pleasant Street to First Parish Church. The town paid them five cents. The deed specified that the land was to be used only “as a public walk or Mall” forever. So far, that promise has been honored, but in many different ways over the past two centuries. As you walk around the Mall, Jym will talk about, and share images of, the many changes the parcel has gone through over time.
Jane’s Walk is a global festival of free, volunteer-led walking conversations inspired by community activist Jane Jacobs. Jane’s Walks combine the simple act of exploring a place with personal observations, local history, and civic engagement. The annual Jane’s Walk festival takes place the first weekend in May, in more than 200 cities and towns around the globe. In 2024, it will be held in Maine on Saturday, May 4, 2024.
