Downtown Brunswick Poetry Stroll 04/01/24-04/30/24 at All Day

Downtown Brunswick Poetry Stroll

Brunswick’s young poets take center stage in the 3rd annual Downtown Brunswick Poetry Stroll! The theme of this year’s event is Brunswick: the Poetry Place, with students in all four Brunswick schools writing poems inspired by landmarks and special places in our hometown.

Look for the poetry posters with accompanying Brunswick photographs on display in more than 35 downtown storefront windows to celebrate National Poetry Month in April!

Poets include students from Kate Furbish Elementary School, Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School, Brunswick Junior High School, Brunswick High School, Spindleworks, and People Plus.

The auction will feature items including local gift certificates, jewelry, private dinners, variety baskets, clothing, classes, paintings, vintage treasures, hand-made items and much more – there is something for everyone – in every price range! Visit www.peopleplusmaine.org, and click on the link for the auction to view the catalog of amazing items. New items will be added every Thursday afternoon so check back often and place your bids (you’ll be notified if someone outbids you so you can bid again!).

Music in April is THE signature fundraiser for People Plus. It enables us to serve over 1500 People Plus members who represent an ever-increasing population of retirees and elders on the Mid Coast. This non-profit could NOT do it without the income from Music in April – which has become a fantastic signature event in our community. The Center has raised over $725,000 from the event over the last 21 years. These last few years have demonstrated exactly how vital People Plus is to the lives of the older adult populations. In addition to hundreds of classes, clubs and meals held safely at the Center, we made over four thousand deliveries of groceries, food pantry boxes, meals and prescriptions – and provided over 33,000 miles of transportation – just last year, keeping seniors safe!

People Plus serves the greater Brunswick community by offering a variety of activities to support engaged, healthy and independent lives for older adults, as well as hosting the Teen Center where young people can meet safely to explore creative outlets, eat a healthy meal, and develop into well-rounded adults. People Plus also provides outreach and transportation services, and offers many volunteer opportunities.

People Plus wishes to thank Lead Sponsors Coastal Landing Retirement Community, Mid Coast-Parkview Health Maine Health, Bill Dodge Auto Group, Bowdoin College, Live + Work in Maine, Priority Real Estate Group, Bath Savings Institution, Riley Insurance Agency, and Rusty Lantern Market. Also sponsors Brackett Funeral Home, Goodwin Motor Group, Legacy Properties – Sotheby’s International Realty, Off Their Rockers, Spectrum Generations, Maine State Music Theatre, Midcoast Maine Pickleball, Norway Savings Bank, Avita of Brunswick/Sunnybrook, Bangor Savings Bank, Darling’s Ford, Dead River Company, Edward Jones – Brunswick, Edward Jones – Topsham, Kennebec Savings Bank, The Highlands, Thornton Oaks Retirement Community, Atlantic Federal Credit Union, Maine Community Bank and Brunswick Instant Printing.

An Evening with Chris Smither 04/20/24 at 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm

An Evening with Chris Smither

On Saturday, April 20th at 7:30 pm, the legendary Chris Smither will perform at the Unitarian Universalist of Brunswick for their Concerts for a Cause series. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to  Mid Coast New Mainers Group and Oasis Free Clinics.

Chris Smither is a folk/blues singer, guitarist and songwriter who has been performing for almost 60 years. Reviewers and fans from around the world, including Rolling Stone and The New York Times, agree that 80-year old Smither continues to be a profound songwriter, a blistering guitarist, and intense performer as he draws deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets and humanist philosophers

Smither’s steady nationwide touring and regular releases of consistently acclaimed albums (27 of them) cemented his reputation as one of the finest acoustic musicians in the country. He has received many music awards over the years and written music for many films such as “The Horse Whisperer.”

Scores of notable artists have recorded Smithers’ songs, including his good friend Bonnie Raitt who recorded his songs, “Love You Like A Man” and “I Feel the Same.”  She has praised Smither’s songwriting and guitar work calling him “my Eric Clapton.”

“Smither is an American original – a product of the musical melting pot and one of the absolute best singer-songwriters in the world.” — Associated Press

Tickets:  $30 in advance, $35 at the door, $10 Students/Children
Available at the church office, Gulf of Maine Books, or online at  https://ticketstripe.com/smither
