Music in April is THE signature fundraiser for People Plus. It enables us to serve over 1500 People Plus members who represent an ever-increasing population of retirees and elders on the Mid Coast. This non-profit could NOT do it without the income from Music in April – which has become a fantastic signature event in our community. The Center has raised over $725,000 from the event over the last 21 years. These last few years have demonstrated exactly how vital People Plus is to the lives of the older adult populations. In addition to hundreds of classes, clubs and meals held safely at the Center, we made over four thousand deliveries of groceries, food pantry boxes, meals and prescriptions – and provided over 33,000 miles of transportation – just last year, keeping seniors safe! People Plus serves the greater Brunswick community by offering a variety of activities to support engaged, healthy and independent lives for older adults, as well as hosting the Teen Center where young people can meet safely to explore creative outlets, eat a healthy meal, and develop into well-rounded adults. People Plus also provides outreach and transportation services, and offers many volunteer opportunities. People Plus wishes to thank Lead Sponsors Coastal Landing Retirement Community, Mid Coast-Parkview Health Maine Health, Bill Dodge Auto Group, Bowdoin College, Live + Work in Maine, Priority Real Estate Group, Bath Savings Institution, Riley Insurance Agency, and Rusty Lantern Market. Join the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum for a Talk with Author and Historian Mindy JohnsonAs part of the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum’s Arctic Exploration in Motion II: A Film Festival, Mindy Johnson, will talk about Maine native Bessie Mae Kelley and her surviving films believed to be the earliest surviving hand-drawn animation, animated and directed by a woman. Mindy is an award-winning author, historian, filmmaker, educator, musician and more, Mindy Johnson’s creative accomplishments reflect the diversity of her talents and experience. A leading expert on women’s roles in animation and film history, Mindy writes and speaks on early cinema, animation, women’s history, and creativity. Mindy’s groundbreaking discoveries continue to cast light on the invisible narrative of women’s presence within the first century of the motion picture industry. Her latest landmark breakthrough is the discovery of Bessie Mae Kelley. Kelley’s work remained largely unknown until her collection was rediscovered and two of her films were restored by Mindy Johnson in 2022. Johnson discovered Kelley in a series of images of male animators from the early 1920s. Other historians had previously assumed her to be a secretary or cleaning woman. The museum will also be presenting films and commentary on April 12 and 13 as part of the festival. Details to follow at the website below. |
