Tern Coffee & Tea, located at 141A Maine Street, is a coffee roastery and tasting bar dedicated to sourcing and roasting exceptional coffees and fine teas. Tern’s hands-on sourcing approach provides a unique experience, offering coffee from Colombia to Ethiopia to El Salvador, and beyond. Each spring, owners Heidi and Chris travel to origin, creating relationships with coffee farms across the globe.
We truly enjoy sharing our passion for coffee and tea with the Brunswick community. At the end of this month, we will be traveling to Oaxaca to source new, incredible coffees to share with you upon our return.
Head roaster Chris Townsend is a two-time Good Foods Awards winner. This year, Tern has submitted a Honey Pacamara from their recent trip to El Salvador, which placed in the top five regionally and in the top 25 out of 1,200 nationwide entries, earning Tern a spot as a 2026 finalist.
Heidi Townsend began roasting coffee in her home, originally selling at farmers’ markets. Heidi has extensive experience working in coffee shops, roasteries, and previously owning a cafe in Stowe, Vermont. Together, Heidi and her husband Chris, Tern’s head roaster and coffee equipment technician, supply coffee to a variety of restaurants and cafes, as well as operating Tern’s new tasting bar.
We recently decided to open a tasting bar here in Brunswick. While we are too busy with our accounts to run a full-scale cafe, I felt we needed the direct feedback and community interaction we enjoyed years ago. This new space gives us a chance to connect with the Brunswick community and continuously refine our products.
Our coffee right now is roasted on a 5 pound tabletop roaster, meaning it takes a bunch of time to roast. We have just purchased a bigger roaster which will give us much more time for maintaining our business. Many people think that the Brunswick tasting bar is all that we do but we roast for many more cafe’s and restaurants in Maine.
We have just landed the new Peruvian Coffees that usually come around in the spring. We had a wonderful time cupping them here at our Saturday coffee cupping and deciding which lots to bring in this season.
