About the Business:

Whether you’re overhauling your household, transforming your organization, or mobilizing your community, we have the resources you need to practice sustainability wisely. A partnership between Fred Horch and Peggy Siegle, long-time Brunswick residents, formed Sustainable Practice in 2023 to provide science-based publications and presentations that focus on sustainable actions individuals or organizations can take to achieve their goals. In the past three years, we have published two books, and a third is currently in production. We also write weekly on the Substack platform under the title One Step This Week, and we write a sustainability column biweekly for the Times Record. We look forward to producing the inaugural Earth Day Festival in Brunswick this April 25, from 10-3 at Harriet Beecher Stowe School, with sponsors enabling us to offer free activities with approximately 50 exhibitors. We intend to continue the Festival annually. Please visit our website www.SustainablePractice.Life to check our resources and look for our books in local and national bookstores. Call Peggy at 207.776.1197 to schedule a workshop or presentation.

Why Brunswick?

Fred and Peggy have both lived in Brunswick for over two decades and are committed to the community. We choose to center our business operations here, although we write for an international audience.

What is something that would surprise people to know about you or your business?

We think that people would be surprised to know that we have published three books in the last year and that we are committed to training sustainable practitioners worldwide.

What is your favorite thing that you’re currently selling?

A membership for $10.00 that makes you a member of the worldwide Sustainable Practitioner community.

What is the average amount of money someone can expect to pay at your business?

We have topic booklets for as little as $5.00, our Your Earth Share series for $10. Our large Sustainable Practices reference book sells for $34.99. They will soon be able to join Sustainable Practice as a member, which provides year-round resources and a free Your Earth Share book for the $10.00 membership fee, with additional benefits at the $50 level.

What business would you recommend supporting other than your own?

We recommend supporting sustainable businesses with track records of addressing environmental concerns, such as B Corps, and those that strive to operate with the most environmentally sound practices. We recommend those who have impact statements about caring for the environment, who support local farmers, or who purchase organic food, who are conscious of waste disposal issues, and who strive to be examples of environmental stewardship.

What’s your favorite Brunswick Activity?

Fred’s in the Town Fall Halloween Parade; Peggy’s is Music on the Mall in the summer.

(We hope the Earth Day in Brunswick Festival will become one of everyone’s favorite activities going forward, after the inaugural 2026 Festival!)
