What is the Brunswick Downtown Association?

The Brunswick Downtown Association (BDA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting downtown Brunswick as a vibrant and welcoming place to live, work, shop, dine, and visit. Additionally, We are 1 of 11 Nationally Accredited Main Street’s in Maine and are responsible for managing Brunswick’s Visitor Center.

Is the Brunswick Downtown Association part of the Town of Brunswick?

No, the Brunswick Downtown Association is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. While we work closely with and receive financial support from the Town of Brunswick on initiatives that support the downtown district—such as events, beautification efforts, and economic development—we are not a municipal department.

Our work is funded through memberships, sponsorships, donations, and fundraising events, and is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors representing local businesses and community members.

How is the Brunswick Downtown Association different from a Chamber of Commerce?

While both organizations support local businesses and community development, the Brunswick Downtown Association (BDA) operates as an accredited Main Street program. Our mission is centered on enhancing the vitality, appearance, and experience of downtown through events, beautification projects, business support, and historic preservation.

In contrast, a Chamber of Commerce typically serves a broader geographic area, focusing more on regional business advocacy, policy, and networking across multiple sectors and municipalities.

The BDA works collaboratively with local partners, including the local Chamber, but our efforts are uniquely tailored to the economic and cultural vibrancy of Brunswick’s downtown district.

Where does the Brunswick Downtown Association get its funding?

The BDA is funded through a mix of community support and partnerships. Our funding year-to-year approximately breaks down as follows:

  • 1/3 from the Town of Brunswick – through annual municipal support.
  • 1/3 from sponsorships – from local businesses and organizations that support our events and programs
  • 1/3 from memberships and individual donations – from businesses, residents, and supporters who value a vibrant downtown

This diverse funding model helps us remain community-driven, mission-focused, and responsive to the needs of downtown Brunswick.
