In true Maine fashion, Brunswick residents braved the cold and snow last Saturday to participate in the BDA’s first annual 207 Day, a celebration of all things Maine. Festivities began at 10:00 AM and included Family Skate, The Lobster Slapshot Showdown, s’mores stations, an ice sculpture demonstration by SubZero Ice Carving, and the main(e) event of the day, The 207 Day Whoopie Pie Bake-Off.
Nine local restaurants (Wild Oats, Noble Kitchen & Bar, Baked on Maine, Porteur Breads, Walter’s Cafe, The Holy Donut, Gelato Fiasco, Wildflours Bakery, and Frosty’s) participated in The Whoopie Pie Bake-Off for a chance at being named The Best Whoopie Pie in Brunswick. Community members were invited into the event’s warming tent to sample each business’ whoopie pie and vote for the Best Classic and Most Unique.
A selection of judges (Tim Dean: Culinary Arts Instructor at Region 10 Technical High School, Brianne Smithson: Chair of the Brunswick Parks & Recreation Commission & Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Bowdoin College, Jason Cleary: Fire & Life Safety Specialist at Brunswick Fire Department, and Dustan Larsen: Development Director at Maine State Music Theatre) voted for the juried portion of the bake-off: The Best Whoopie Pie in Brunswick.
Best Classic Whoopie Pie (Community Vote): Wild Oats
Most Unique Whoopie Pie (Community Vote): Baked on Maine
Best Whoopie Pie in Brunswick (Juried Vote): Porteur Breads
The BDA’s first 207 Day was a success, bringing together community members in our shared love for the state of Maine. A huge thank you to all of our community members, volunteers, local businesses, and sponsors who helped bring this new event to life. We can’t wait to celebrate with you again next year!
