SUMMARY:An Evening with Pejepscot Station
DESCRIPTION:The UUCB Concerts for a Cause series presents the local favorite bluegrass band\, Pejepscot Station\, on Saturday\, January 17th at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick\, 1 Middle Street\, Brunswick to raise money for local charities. \nBased in the village of Pejepscot (in Topsham\, ME)\, Pejepscot Station has performed throughout southern Maine since forming in 2011. Their repertoire is a mix of traditional and contemporary bluegrass\, Americana\, and some “bluegrassified” folk and country songs. Wide vocal harmonies and an informal and relaxed stage presence make for an enjoyable and fun show appropriate for all. \nThe idea of a band started in 1972 when Satch and Ren\, then in high school\, began noodling around with the banjo and guitar. Later in 1977 during their college days\, “Lonesome” Jim joined up with Ren\, and the pair performed at a couple venues. Fast forward to July 4th\, 2011 (34 years later!)\, Ren\, Satch and Jim played for another unpaid gig at the July 4th lobster bake in Pejepscot and decided to get the band back together. \nIn the spring of 2013 a new bass player\, Cherie\, joined Pejepscot Station\, adding her considerable talent and abundant joy to the band. Her outstanding bass playing is coupled with her singing of lead and harmony vocals. In 2019\, Russ Donahue joined and added depth to the band with his crisp mandolin and guitar work\, and his harmony and lead vocals.\nAudiences feel right at home and always enjoy the great music and silly banter. The fun the band has is contagious. Pejepscot Station gets your toes tapping\, gets you laughing\, and plants a song or two in your head for the trip home. \nTickets are $25 in advance\, $30 at the door\, and $10 for students/children. Available at the church office (729-8515)\, Gulf of Maine Books\, or online at https://ticketstripe.com/bluegrass.

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil
DESCRIPTION:LOCAL CONGREGATIONS TO HOST TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE SERVICE\nThursday\, November 20 @ 7 pm \nBy a recent count\, at least twenty-five transgender or gender variant lives have been lost in the United States since this time last year. Those are just the murders that have been made known\, and in the context of the anti-trans focus of the current administration\, we know that underreporting is a fact. Many victims of transphobic violence never have their deaths publicly acknowledged. With the recent bombardment of anti-trans legislation aimed to suppress the trans and gender variant community in this country\, the acknowledgement of these tragic deaths is all the more critical. Now\, more than ever\, it is important to speak their names and honor their memories. To this end\, local churches and nonprofit organizations are joining together to host a Transgender Day of Remembrance gathering in Brunswick on Thursday\, November 20. \nWHAT IS TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE? \nTransgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith began Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) in 1999. TDOR began as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester\, a transgender woman who was killed in Alliston\, Massachusetts in 1998. The vigil also commemorated all the transgender and gender variant lives lost to anti-Trans violence in the time following Rita Hester’s murder. Thus began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance observed throughout the world on November 20th. \nTDOR founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith says\, “Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights\, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered\, and that we continue to fight for justice.” \nHOW CAN I GET INVOLVEC IN THE TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE? \nJoin organizers from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick; First Universalist Church of Yarmouth; Beth Israel Congregation of Bath; First Parish Church in Brunswick; the Sexuality\, Women\, and Gender Center from Bowdoin College and the Brunswick Pride Committee in a service to honor the transgender and gender variant lives lost this year to transphobic violence. \nThis Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday\, November 20 at the UU Church of Brunswick located at 1 Middle St. in Brunswick.\nWhile this vigil is being held at a church\, it is led and supported by both religious leaders and community members. This TDOR vigil is open to all who support the transgender and gender variant community.

SUMMARY:VentiCordi Chamber Music presents\, ‘IMAGINE’
DESCRIPTION:This evocative musical experience invites you into two extraordinary sound worlds—one unfinished\, the other timeless. \nBegin with Arnold Schönberg’s Ein Stelldichein (A Rendezvous)\, a rarely heard early work shimmering with late-Romantic color and mystery. Though incomplete\, it offers a tantalizing glimpse into the young composer’s expressive voice. \nThen\, journey into the transcendent with Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time\, written during his imprisonment in a WWII camp. Scored for an unusual ensemble of piano\, clarinet\, violin\, and cello\, this masterpiece is a meditation on eternity\, faith\, and the resilience of the human spirit. Let this evening of profound beauty and emotional depth transport you beyond the boundaries of time and sound. \nPlease join us at 1:00 for a pre-concert panel discussion of the fascinating story behind Messiaen’s remarkable work.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Soggy Po Boys
DESCRIPTION:New Hampshire-based SOGGY PO BOYS will bring the musical traditions of New Orleans to the Concerts for a Cause stage on Saturday\, October 18th at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick\, 1 Middle Street\, Brunswick to raise money for Oasis Free Clinics and the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project. \nWith a contemporary New Orleans sound\, Soggy Po Boys explore the vast musical traditions of New Orleans and expand their repertoire to look beyond NOLA jazz. This young octet plays traditional New Orleans jazz\, the kind with fluttering clarinet solos and swingin’ shout-along choruses\, and playful bursts of brass. But they’ve also got the soul\, the spirit and the swing of street-parade chants\, classic blues\, Meters funk\, rocking rumbas\, even calypso\, noting New Orleans is the northernmost Caribbean city. Suffice it to say\, the music is hot and driving when it’s fast\, and sultry when it’s slow. You will also hear the heavy influence of the New Orleans sound in their original tunes. The main thing the band aims for is accessibility with their music. Soprano saxophonist and clarinetist Eric Klaxton describes their sound as\, “Whether or not you know the tune ahead of time\, by the time we’re done playing it four minutes later\, the melodies are the kind of thing you can walk away whistling.” \nSoggy Po Boys have quickly become an institution. They are spreading the good news of New Orleans music across the northeast and beyond\, playing at concert halls and street corners; music festivals and burlesque festivals; bars and libraries; wherever the party requires. Part of the beauty of New Orleans music is that it’s celebrated and appreciated wherever it goes\, from the street to the theater. \nThe Soggy Po Boys are: \nShaina Schwartz : Vocals\nJim Dozet : Vocals + Guitar\nEric Klaxton : Clarinet + Saxophones\nNick Mainella : Tenor Saxophone\nJosh Gagnon : Trombone\nMike Effenberger : Piano\nScott Kiefner : Bass\nBrian Waterhouse : Drums \nTickets are $25 in advance\, $30 at the door\, and $10 for students/children. Available at the church office (729-8515)\, Gulf of Maine Books\, or online at http://ticketstripe.com/soggypo
