I am looking for information about Nathaniel Davis in Brunswick ME. Who was he and why is the park named for him?

        Hi Kathryn,
Here’s what we were able to find:

Nathaniel Davis was the father of Samuel Gross Davis (1841-1932), a wealthy realtor from Boston. When Samuel died, he left $5000 to the town of Brunswick in his will, creating the Nathaniel Davis Fund in memory of his father. The fund was used to create the park, and continues to fund projects to this day!

I wonder if Ms. Kalmar google-searched her question, as I just did the very same thing and it also brought me to this page! Had she not posted the question, I may have been compelled to. I appreciate the great response from brunswickdowntown.org and wanted to expand on it a little (though your post answers her question perfectly). I just wanted to add that if you go back further in time, the FIRST Nathaniel Davis to arrive in Brunswick did so well before the year 1800. As I recall, there are actually three successive generations of Nathaniel Davis to follow, the last of these being the father of above-mentioned Samuel. Throughout all of these generations, DAVIS was a significant, powerhouse of a family. They were philanthropic and very affluent. Through the generations, these Nathaniels were proprietors in everything from railroad start-ups to downtown bookstores (which Wheeler & Wheeler mentions going up in flames once) to (at least two) cotton plants, to international trade and (I think) ship-building. The first Nathaniel Davis in Brunswick married my 4th g-grandfather’s sister, Mary Noyes. She was a school teacher in town and I very much hope to someday to someday learn more about Mary Davis. Cheers!
