Women’s History Month: The Friendship of Senator Margaret Chase Smith & Isabel Whittier

Pejepscot Historical Society hosts this Women’s History Month talk by David Richards, Director of the Margaret Chase Smith Library in Skowhegan. Mr. Richards looks at the friendship of two ground-breaking Maine women. Senator Margaret Chase Smith was the first woman to run for president and is famous for her “Declaration of Conscience” speech against Senator Joseph McCarthy. Isabel Whittier, part of Brunswick’s Skolfield-Whittier family, pursued an academic career, teaching at Hunter and Brooklyn Colleges, and authored several books.
