Art historian Richard Saunders, Director, Middlebury College Museum of Art, Walter Cerf Distinguished College Professor, and author of the recently published American Faces: A Cultural History of Portraiture and Identity (2016), discusses the emergence of portrait abstraction in the context of the broader history of American portraiture.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition, This Is a Portrait If I Say So:  Identity in American Art, 1912 to Today at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.
