Dr. Margaret Bendroth, Executive Director of the Congregational Library and Archives in Boston, will speak Sunday, May 3, at 11:30 AM at First Parish Church of Brunswick.  Her topic:   “On the Trail of New England’s Hidden Histories.”Library-10

Surprising insights into life in colonial and early American times are moldering in rusty file cabinets and boxes in church basements throughout New England.   Prior to independence, church and town matters were considered the same, and taxes were levied to support the local church.  As a result, records of not only births, weddings and deaths, but also contentious town meetings, tax collection, and other municipal matters ended up in church attics and basements.

Since 2005 the Congregational Library, in partnership with the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale, has been rescuing old records from church attics and basements, and making them widely accessible through preservation and digitization.

The program is open to the public; all are welcome.
