The Quartet stretches itself both geographically and musically with Summer Series II: “Then and Now.” The series gallops through classical music from its earliest foundations to a hot-off-the-press contemporary work: a new quartet commissioned by the DaPonte String Quartet.
“Then and Now” will consist of differing selections including: Dutch-born composer Rocco Havelaar’s Quartet No. 3, J.S. Bach’s Three Contrapuncti from The Art of Fugue, and Felix Mendelssohn’s Op. 13 (one of two works featured on the DSQ’s soon-to-be released CD).
The DSQ is especially pleased to be presenting the Havelaar world premiere. Fittingly– for the Then and Now theme–Havelaar says his work, while a thoroughly contemporary string quartet, was inspired by Brahms and late Beethoven.
