DaPonte String Quartet Summer Festival at Bates College – “Culture and Catastrophe”

Pianists Frank Glazer, George Lopez Join DaPonte Quartet for Festival at Bates College Aug. 20 and 25
Pianists Frank Glazer and George Lopez join the DaPonte String Quartet for a two-concert festival called “Culture and Catastrophe” commemorating the 100th anniversary of WWI at Bates College in late August.
The August 20 program will feature Mr. Glazer on piano performing works by Gabriel Fauré (Piano Quartet No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 15) and Johannes Brahms (Piano Quartet No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 25); Bela Bartok’s Duos for Violins will also be performed.  On  Aug. 25, Mr. Lopez joins the quartet to perform works by Claude Debussy (Violin Sonata in G Minor) and Frank Bridge (There is a Willow Grows Aslant a Brook). The program will also include Zoltan Kodaly’s Duo for Violin and Cello, Op. 7.
Mr. Glazer, who is approaching his own 100th “anniversary,” is the long-time Artist-in-Residence at Bates College and a renowned international pianist. At age 99, he still performs regularly as a soloist  throughout the world, and as a concert pianist with leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Lopez is the Beckwith Artist in Residence at Bowdoin College and conductor of the Bowdoin Chamber Orchestra. He has been featured across the globe as recitalist and soloist with orchestra in such places as Paris, London, Cologne, Los Angeles, and New York’s Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.
The DaPonte String Quartet came to Maine 22 years ago from Philadelphia, and were this month voted the “Best Musical Group in Maine” by readers of Down East Magazine. They perform over 40 concerts a year, year round, across the state of Maine.
Performances are at 7:30 at the Olin Arts Center, Bates College, Lewiston, on Aug. 20 and 25. Tickets ($25) are available at Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick and from www.DaPonte.org
