The DaPonte String Quartet performs performs some of the world’s most “profound and deeply felt” music in its upcoming concert series, “Memento Mori,” with performances from May 7-14 in Brunswick, Portland, Damariscotta, Boothbay Harbor and Rockport.
Cellist Scott Kluksdahl returns to Maine to perform with the Quartet Schubert’s much-adored Cello Quintet in C Major, considered by many to be his masterpiece. The program also offers a rare chance to hear Thomas Adès’s complex “Arcadiana,” his personal evocation of paradise. Samuel Barber’s most famous piece, the excruciatingly moving Adagio from String Quartet, completes the concert.
“This music is some of the most profound and deeply-felt ever written,” says DaPonte String Quartet violinist Ferdinand Liva. “Even though these works are from different eras, and styles, each work has a depth of emotion and internal gravity that is unusual. Schubert’s monumental Quintet has a slow movement that many great musicians would love to have with them for all eternity. The Adagio of Barber was called ‘a lollapalooza’ by the composer himself, and the Adès weaves a thread so fine and ethereal it is almost without equal.”
Kluksdahl, a graduate of Harvard and Julliard, has been described by Strings magazine as “a simply superb cellist, playing with consummate technical ease, a beautiful sound, total conviction, authority and dedication to the music.” The DaPonte String Quartet are currently celebrating their 25th year as a quartet, an anniversary that will culminate with a special “Evening of Piano Quintets” featuring guest artist Awadagin Pratt at Bowdoin College’s Studzinski Hall on May 18.
