SUMMARY:Spring Choral Concert\, "Who's My Neighbor?"
DESCRIPTION:The Adult Choir of First Parish Church\, under the direction of Dr. Jane Hagness\, will present their Spring Concert\, Who’s My Neighbor? This musical exploration of immigrant stories and our love song to our immigrant siblings will take place on Saturday\, May 2nd at 3:00 p.m. in the church’s beautiful and historic sanctuary located at 217 Maine Street in Brunswick\, Maine. \nThe concert program will include the beloved Irving Berlin song\, “Give Me Your Tired\, Your Poor\,” with words by Emma Lazarus; “Room at the Welcome Table\,” a Craig Curry arrangement of two traditional spirituals; and “Two Immigrants\,” composer Jenni Brandon’s setting of a poem by Maya Porcelli. The choir will sing Norwegian composer Kim André Arnesen’s “Do Not Neglect\,” a stand-alone movement from his larger work\, The Stranger\, with a thought-provoking text from Hebrews 13:2: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers\, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” Attendees also will hear composer\, Kurt Bestor’s\, “Prayer of the Children\,” dedicated to child victims of war; as well as the premiere of a new choral piece composed by Dr. Hagness\, “Who’s My Neighbor?” and many others. \nBaritone\, Nathaniel Menifield will be the featured soloist for this concert. We will also be joined by Joel Pierce\, piano; Linda Nagy Johnston\, violin; and Fred Edelen\, cello. \nTicket prices: Adults $25.00; Free admission for students and children. A portion of the ticket sales will go to the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP). DESCRIPTION:UUCB Concerts for a Cause presents award-winning folk and roots band\, Low Lily\, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick on Saturday\, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. to raise money for Oasis Free Clinics and Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project. \nWith a vocal blend that has been dubbed “outstanding” and “meticulous” as well as world-class instrumental prowess\, Low Lily has shared their signature sound with enthusiastic audiences throughout North America and the UK\, garnering two #1 songs on international folk radio and two Independent Music Award wins. In 2018\, the band released a full-length album with 2X award-winning title track “10\,000 Days Like These” and their original song “Hope Lingers On”\, which has been sung by choirs around the world as an anthem for peace and justice. \nWith the release of their new record “Angels in the Wreckage\,” Low Lily brings their infectious sound to a new level. With the energy of fiddle music\, the introspective quality of contemporary folk\, the precision of bluegrass\, and the drive of Americana\, the members of Low Lily combine their individual talents into one stunning soundscape.\nLow Lily’s core founding members are married couple Liz Simmons (vocals\, guitar) and Flynn Cohen (vocals\, mandolin\, guitar)\, both of Brattleboro\, Vermont. Massachusetts-based Lily Sexton (vocals\, fiddle\, guitar) recently joined the group. Lily’s sweet\, clear voice blends beautifully with Cohen’s and Simmons’ in close three-part harmony– a major feature of their trio sound. \nAs an added bonus\, Elsie Gawler\, the well-known musician from Midcoast Maine\, will be a supporting act for the show. Elsie Gawler is a multi-instrumentalist and songster rooted in Maine’s traditional folk music and culture. With her family\, the Gawler Family Band\, she has played throughout the Northeast sharing traditional fiddle tunes\, songs\, and original works since she was 4 years old.
