SUMMARY:Humor - Not Just a Laughing Matter
DESCRIPTION:Midcoast Senior College presents its free speaker series\, Winter Wisdom\, sponsored by The Highlands of Topsham. Experts recommend a healthy diet and ongoing exercise to enhance our well-being in the aging process\, but what about the role of humor? We’ve all heard the saying “laughter is the best medicine\,” but what is it about humor and laughter that makes us feel so good? Susan Flewelling Goran spent her 50-year nursing career caring for critically ill patients and their families as educator\, director\, author\, and clinical specialist. A frequent speaker at regional\, national\, and international conferences\, she was known for her use of humor and creativity for enhanced learning for both professional and lay audiences.

SUMMARY:Winter Sowing Workshop at Growing to Give
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 17 from 10AM-12PM to learn how to start seeds for your garden or hedgerow on your own timeline without any fancy growing equipment! \nThis propagation method uses clear plastic recycled containers (e.g. milk jugs and salad containers) and potting soil to start seeds outdoors during the winter. This workshop will go over the method\, which plants are best to winter sow\, which plants are more challenging to winter sow\, and what to do once your seeds have germinated in the spring. Everyone will leave with at least one winter sown jug and the confidence to sow more for their garden. \nAll materials included. Warm cider\, coffee\, tea\, and a simple snack included. $10 suggested donation to help us cover potting soil costs. \nSnow date: Saturday\, January 24.

SUMMARY:Repair Cafe at Curtis Memorial Library
DESCRIPTION:In an effort to reduce waste and to learn new skills the library is offering a Repair Cafe!If you haven’t heard of a repair café before it’s a global movement that started in Europe but has grown into a global organization with the goal of reducing waste as well as educating people on how to repair the items that break everyday rather then throw them away. It’s a great way of connecting members of the community that are familiar with repairs and those that aren’t but are excited to learn! On Saturday December 6th from 10 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. at the Curtis Memorial Library will host a group of volunteers who will work with patrons to repair their items\, this is an excellent opportunity to learn how to repair common items rather then have to replace them. \nWe will have experts able to repair electronics\, lamps\, mend clothing\, small appliances\, sharpen tools\, wooden furniture\, Jewelry and Bicycles. If we are unable to repair your item we will make suggestions on were you can find the parts and learn how to do the repair or have it professionally repaired. Please bring your items to the library\, through the outside doors to the Morrell Meeting room along middle street. This is a first come\, first served program and depending on the turnout we can’t guarantee we will be able to help every one or repair every item. \nOur goal is to help our community learn how simple many repairs can be and that their are local experts within our community willing to help. If you have any questions or if there is something you would like repaired but don’t know if we can help at the repair cafe please call the library at 725-5242 ext 4.

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil
DESCRIPTION:LOCAL CONGREGATIONS TO HOST TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE SERVICE\nThursday\, November 20 @ 7 pm \nBy a recent count\, at least twenty-five transgender or gender variant lives have been lost in the United States since this time last year. Those are just the murders that have been made known\, and in the context of the anti-trans focus of the current administration\, we know that underreporting is a fact. Many victims of transphobic violence never have their deaths publicly acknowledged. With the recent bombardment of anti-trans legislation aimed to suppress the trans and gender variant community in this country\, the acknowledgement of these tragic deaths is all the more critical. Now\, more than ever\, it is important to speak their names and honor their memories. To this end\, local churches and nonprofit organizations are joining together to host a Transgender Day of Remembrance gathering in Brunswick on Thursday\, November 20. \nWHAT IS TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE? \nTransgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith began Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) in 1999. TDOR began as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester\, a transgender woman who was killed in Alliston\, Massachusetts in 1998. The vigil also commemorated all the transgender and gender variant lives lost to anti-Trans violence in the time following Rita Hester’s murder. Thus began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance observed throughout the world on November 20th. \nTDOR founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith says\, “Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights\, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered\, and that we continue to fight for justice.” \nHOW CAN I GET INVOLVEC IN THE TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE? \nJoin organizers from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick; First Universalist Church of Yarmouth; Beth Israel Congregation of Bath; First Parish Church in Brunswick; the Sexuality\, Women\, and Gender Center from Bowdoin College and the Brunswick Pride Committee in a service to honor the transgender and gender variant lives lost this year to transphobic violence. \nThis Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday\, November 20 at the UU Church of Brunswick located at 1 Middle St. in Brunswick.\nWhile this vigil is being held at a church\, it is led and supported by both religious leaders and community members. This TDOR vigil is open to all who support the transgender and gender variant community.
