First Parish Church in Brunswick is extending an invitation to the general public to hear a special presentation on two of Brunswick’s most iconic organizations. Entitled First Parish Church and Bowdoin College: A Shared History. The event is being held on Sunday, April 24, 2022, starting at 11:15 a.m. and is being presented in the church’s 177-year-old sanctuary located at 207 Maine Street in Brunswick.
The featured speaker will be historian John Cross, a native of Brunswick whose family has been an integral part of both Bowdoin and the Church. He is a 1976 graduate of Bowdoin who went onto earn M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in anthropology from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He has served as president and member of the Board of Directors of the Pejepscot Historical Society (now the Pejepscot History Center) and the Maine Archaeological Society. For nearly 25 years he has been the unofficial historian of Bowdoin College, where he serves as the Secretary of Development and College Relations.
“We are honored to host John Cross as he is considered by many to be one of the best presenters of the connection of these two major local organizations,” said Wanda Webber Snyder, chair of the event’s organizing committee. “Their histories closely embrace this and the strong influence they had on the evolution of the Brunswick region.”
From the beginning of the founding of Bowdoin College (1794) and First Parish Church (1717) until the 20th Century both Brunswick landmarks have had an unusually close relationship. Several of the church’s stained glass windows and the Harriet Beecher Stowe and Joshua Chamberlain serve as examples of this.
