About this Event

Mere Brook’s 2760-acre watershed is all within Brunswick, and so what happens in and to the brook is born of Brunswick. Mere Brook has also been labeled “urban-impaired” by Maine DEP and the EPA, a designation that requires Brunswick and Cumberland County to create and advance a plan to raise its water quality to Class B. Still, even in its degraded state, Mere Brook supports a trout population, and it has beautiful wild stretches. Can we, the people of Brunswick, find both the will and the way to clean up our backyard stream? Our brook’s watershed management plan says, YES. So do we, Mere Brook’s friends; we invite you to join us.

About the Speaker: David Page, Bowdoin Professor of Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry Emeritus and Sandy Stott, Chair of the Brunswick Conservation Commission, together lead the Mere Brook Steering Committee, which is charged with implementing a Watershed Management Plan to lift the “urban-impaired” water quality of Mere to Class B.

Registration encouraged but not required. This talk is part of our 2026 CREA Speaker Series meant to engage and educate the community about the natural world where we live! These talks encourage participants to better understand our connection to the land and the places we call home. Cathance River Education Alliance, a program of Brunswick Topsham Land Trust, is excited to host these talks in collaboration with the Topsham Public Library. Thank you to Bath Savings Trust Company for sponsoring this series!
