Lemont Block Collective Featured Artists Weekend 09/22/23 at 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Lemont Block Collective Featured Artists Weekend

The Lemont Block Collective, 150 Maine Street in downtown Brunswick, will feature three local artists during an open house weekend, September 21 through 24. Underwater photographer Jonathan Lavan, Driftwood artist Chris Toy, and Tiffany Method glass artist Deborah J. Ripley are each Collective members and Mid Coast residents.

The Lemont Block Collective is an artist-run gallery featuring work from 23 Maine-based artists and makers. Begun as a pop-up in the Fall of 2020 by Cleo Vauban, in the newly renovated Lemont Block building, the Collective remains too successful to close. This September event launches the “Featured Artist Weekend” series of monthly spotlights on Collective artists.

On the 21st, naturalist, educator, and underwater photographer Jonathan Lavan will be the keynote speaker, introducing the audience to underwater photography and the world travel associated with it, in words and pictures. His work is on display at the Collective in multiple formats. The presentation will begin at approximately 5:30pm.

Retired educator Chris Toy will host on the evening of the 21st. Many will know Chris as an accomplished chef and cooking instructor, or perhaps as an international educational  consultant, or as a Maine Guide. At the Collective, his mesmerizing mobiles and ‘stabiles’ made of driftwood, shells and other found materials are contemplative, beautiful and popular.

Former Community Health Educator Deborah J. Ripley turned to stained glass as a “bucket-list” hobby, late in life. Working with her hands, creating, and watching art come to life brought great joy and pleasure. She soon discovered an aptitude for the work and has continued pushing her own boundaries in 2- and 3-dimensional glass projects, expanding her skill set in both abstract and representational directions. On a sunny morning, the Collective is a-light with the beautiful results, in our east-facing windows.

Join us at the Lemont Block Collective, on Thursday, September 21, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and meet these Maine artists. The Featured Artist Weekend continues through 4pm Sunday the 24th, with expanded displays by these artists and increased access to the artists themselves. For more information, please call the Lemont Block Collective at: (207) 371-0115

Celebrate the release of American Breakdown: Our Ailing Nation, My Body’s Revolt, and the Nineteenth-Century Woman Who Brought Me Back to Life with author Jennifer Lunden, in conversation with Jane Brox. Praised by the Washington Post as “[a] rigorous cultural critique…compelling, detailed, and absorbing,” this wide-ranging, genre-crossing literary mystery interweaves Lunden’s quest to understand the source of her own condition with her telling of the story of the chronically ill 19th-century diarist Alice James—ultimately uncovering the many hidden health hazards of life in America. Books will be available for sale and signing (cash/check only) courtesy of Gulf of Maine Books.

Jennifer Lunden is an author, poet, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and former therapist. She is the recipient of the 2019 Maine Arts Fellowship for literary arts and the 2016 Bread Loaf-Rona Jaffe Foundation Scholarship in Nonfiction. Journalism Is Not A Crime 09/26/23 at 7:30 pm - 8:45 pm

Journalism Is Not A Crime

Friends and colleagues of Evan Gershkovich ’14 are coming to the Bowdoin campus September 26 to keep the plight of the jailed Wall Street Journal reporter in the spotlight and highlight the ongoing struggle for press freedom in much of the world. Panelists include Linda Kinstler ’13, A. Leroy Greason Professor of English Brock Clarke, Paul Beckett, Washington Editor of The Wall Street Journal, with Henry Laurence, Professor of Government and Asian Studies, moderating the conversation and inviting the audience to participate with questi

ons and comments for the panel.

Colleagues, Friends of Evan Gershkovich ‘14 Coming to Bowdoin College Campus to Highlight Journalist’s Plight

7:30 p.m.–8:45 p.m. Pickard Theater, Memorial Hall and livestreamed at bowdoin.edu/live

Free and open to the public

(BRUNSWICK, MAINE)—Friends and colleagues of Evan Gershkovich, of the Bowdoin College Class of 2014, are coming to the Bowdoin campus September 26 to keep the plight of the jailed Wall Street Journal reporter in the spotlight and highlight the ongoing struggle for press freedom in much of the world.

Gershkovich, who was based in Moscow, was arrested by the Russian authorities five months ago while on assignment in the city of Yekaterinburg in the east of the country and charged with espionage, although no evidence has been presented. Today he remains behind bars in Moscow, in pretrial detention for at least another three months, in spite of repeated calls for his release from the White House, US lawmakers, the United Nations, international media organizations, and others.

A community conversation will be held on campus on September 26 to talk about Gershkovich, his work as a journalist, his life as a student, and the broader theme of the challenges facing independent journalism in places like Russia. The event is the brainchild of Gershkovich’s Bowdoin friends and fellow journalists Linda Kinstler ’13 and Nora Biette-Timmons ’14. The gathering, they said, will be a chance to bring Gershkovich’s friends, teachers, colleagues, and supporters from Bowdoin and beyond together to rally support for Evan, and to underscore the threats to journalists all over the world.

“Our friend and colleague Evan has been imprisoned in Moscow for five months, simply because he was doing his job,” said Kinstler. “We want to make sure that Evan comes home as soon as possible, and want him to know that we are thinking about him and keeping his case front of mind.”

The discussion panel, to be moderated by Professor of Government and Asian Studies Henry Laurence, will include A. Leroy Greason Professor of English Brock Clarke, who has fond memories of teaching Gershkovich in his creative writing class. “I thought the world of Evan when he was a student, and I think the world of him as a journalist, and a human being. I look forward to talking and hearing more about him on the twenty-sixth,” said Clarke.

The panel is also due to feature the WSJ’s Washington editor, Paul Beckett. “What happened to Evan,” said Beckett, “is indicative of the increasing risks faced by journalists around the world, and it’s critical we continue to highlight not only his case but also how this sort of assault on journalism ultimately impacts everyone. Press freedom is absolutely essential for a free society, and we’re grateful for all of Bowdoin’s support for Evan as well as the opportunity to bring this important discussion to campus.”

“Having so many people come together from different parts of Evan’s life to plan this event was very important to us, and we are so grateful to everyone who’s helped make it happen,” said Biette-Timmons.

The event will be held Tuesday, September 26, 7:30 p.m.–8:45 p.m., in Pickard Theater, Memorial Hall, and will be livestreamed at bowdoin.edu/live. Check the Bowdoin Calendar for more details as the date approaches.

History Happy Hour: Steps in Time--Dance as Cultural Performance 09/28/23 at 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

History Happy Hour: Steps in Time--Dance as Cultural Performance

September History Happy Hour at Pejepscot History Center

Steps in Time: Dance as Cultural Performance with June Vail

September 28 at 5:30pm

at Pejepscot History Center, 159 Park Row, Brunswick, Maine

Dancing is a fundamentally human activity: a badge of identity, a mode of communication, a force in social life. Everyone dances: How we move and dance are physical, emotional, spiritual, aesthetic, and social behaviors. So, are all dances “ethnic?” How does a tango, a pas de deux, a Super Bowl half-time show, or an Abenaki line dance embody and communicate messages for participants and viewers?  What can the comparative study of dance tell us about contemporary American — as well as more unfamiliar — cultures? June Vail, founder of Bowdoin’s dance program and Professor of Dance Emerita, discusses dance as cultural performance.

Tickets: $8 PHC Members; $12 General Admission

MCHPP Book Discussion Group

As part of Harvest Week 2023, MCHPP is excited to offer a free 3-part community discussion series in partnership with the Maine Humanities Council. The discissions will be guided by our facilitator, Lacey Sparks, and grounded in selected texts: Saturday at the Food Pantry by Diane O’Neill and The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson. Our hope is for participants to examine and discuss the deep interconnections between community, our food system and food security. Participation is free and the selected texts are provided at no cost.

The group will convene in-person for three consecutive Thursdays: 9/28, 10/5, and 10/12 from 5:30pm-7:00pm. Space is limited and we ask that participants are able to commit to attending all three discussions. Advanced registration required!

We look forward to being in community with you! Please reach out to Rena at rpulfer@mchpp.org with any questions.

Walking Tour: From Swamp to Centerpiece: The Brunswick Town Mall at 200 10/01/23 at 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Walking Tour: From Swamp to Centerpiece: The Brunswick Town Mall at 200

Encore walking tour! In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Brunswick Mall, local historian Jym St. Pierre lead another tour of “From Swamp to Centerpiece: The Brunswick Town Mall at 200” on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at 1pm.

In June, 1823, three local men conveyed by deed real estate that included the Mall area stretching from Pleasant Street to First Parish Church. The town paid them five cents. The deed specified that the land was to be used only “as a public walk or Mall” forever. So far, that promise has been honored, but in many different ways over the past two centuries. As you walk around the Mall, Jym St. Pierre will talk about, and share images of, the many changes the parcel has gone through over time.

Participants meet at starting point; driving directions and parking information provided upon registration. Please check-in with tour leader at least 10 minutes prior to tour time.

Tours are limited to 20 unless otherwise noted. PHC maintains a waiting list for each tour in case of cancellations. Most tours are 75-90 minutes, though tours outside of downtown may go slightly longer. Please dress accordingly for the weather and wear sturdy shoes, sunblock, and/or bug spray as needed.

PRE-REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT REQUIRED: $8 PHC Members, $12 General Admission (ages 12+), Free for children ages 0-11. Register online using the link below or call Pejepscot History Center at 207.729.6606.

Le Petit Pont: Life and Work by the Androscoggin Walking Tour 10/15/23 at 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Le Petit Pont: Life and Work by the Androscoggin Walking Tour

Pejepscot History Center’s Summer Walking Tour Series

Le Petit Pont: Life and Work by the Androscoggin

with Candace Kanes

Beginning in the parking lot of what is now known as Fort Andross, we will imagine the streets and buildings that were once home to its many employees when the building produced cotton fabric and was known as the Cabot Mill. We will continue the imagining as we walk (very carefully) along Mill Street to Le Petit Pont, the structure we now call the Swinging Bridge to explore its history and its relationship to the mill, mill workers and the community on the west end of the bridge, Topsham Heights. We will cross the bridge to Topsham Heights. While there is still much to look at, we will have to use our imaginations to see the area as it was when the bridge was built in 1892 and the several decades after. For those who wish to do so, we can continue the walk along the paved path by the Androscoggin that will connect us to Main Street in Topsham and the Green Bridge to return to Fort Andross.

Register online or call Pejepscot History Center at 207.729.6606.
