Matthew Alexander Henson: First African-American at the North Pole

Matthew Henson spent years exploring the Arctic with Robert E. Peary and in 1909 he was the only other American to stand with Peary at the North Pole. Henson was excluded from receiving the many honors showered on white members of the expedition. Only near the end of his life did Henson received recognition for his remarkable career as an Arctic explorer. This exhibit is in conjunction with the AF/AM/50 celebrations, celebrating fifty years of Africana Studies, the African American Society, and the John Brown Russwurm African American Center.

The Theater Project presents MIDDLETOWN

The Theater Project presents MIDDLETOWN written by Will Eno and directed by Christopher Price. Opening on November 1st, MIDDLETOWN is a deeply moving and funny play exploring the universe of the American small town. As friendships develop, different lives intersect in strange, poignant ways on a journey that takes them from the local library to outer space and points in between. As director Christopher Price says, “Will Eno writes with a kind of absurdist, abstract and slightly surreal style that, for me, beautifully captures humankind in all its imperfections, those average moments that make up everyday life.  I think that we see ourselves in these characters in ways that we know but are rarely expressed.” Don’t miss this wonderfully evocative, beautifully written play that will leave you thinking about it long after it’s over. Everyone is welcome to attend an opening night reception with refreshments and an opportunity to meet the cast, crew and director after the show.

MIDDLETOWN opens at The Theater Project on Friday, November 1st and runs for three consecutive weekends. Performance times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:00pm. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, $10 for children (12 and under; kids under 2 are free as long as they sit on a patron’s lap); top level seating in the theater is always Pay-What-You-Want.

Tickets are available anytime at theaterproject.com or by calling the box office at 207-729-8584.

The Theater Project is located at 14 School Street in the heart of downtown Brunswick and is a 501(c)(3) organization.

UUCB Working for Justice Series first concert: Deeper than the Skin

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick launches this year’s Working for Justice Series “Many Voices: Widening the Listening Circle” on Saturday, November 23, 2019 with a free community concert called “Deeper Than the Skin,” a musical presentation on Race in America by Reggie Harris and Greg Greenway. Reggie and Greg have a unique story. Born three days apart, their ancestry flowed through the same portal of history, Richmond, VA. They are on a pilgrimage together – one that began three decades ago. The racial divisions that are the reality of America started them in two different worlds, but the amazing bonds of music, mutual respect, sheer admiration, and shared vision have brought them together as friends and colleagues.

Their stories together form the quintessential American story. The music that flowed from these experiences is powered by unadorned truth, raw and riveting, beautiful and uplifting. Echoing Gandhi, they believe that in telling our truths, we are able to rise up from the past and build bridges to each other and the future. The presentation will be interactive and there will be time at the end for discussion.

Reggie Harris a Woodrow Wilson Scholar and the Co-Chair of the Living Legacy Project of the Unitarian Universalist Association, co-leading tours through the historic sites of the Civil Rights movement in the South. Solo, and in the duo, Kim and Reggie Harris, he has led hundreds of programs on Race and Social Justice. Greg Greenway has been heard on NPR’s All Things Considered, Mountain Stage, and Car Talk. He’s played Carnegie Hall and had the honor for two years of having his song, “Rosa Parks,” play when rosaparks.com was opened. For eight years, he was one third of the successful Folk Trio Brother Sun. Together and individually, Reggie and Greg have brought the issue of Race before audiences around the world.

Building on momentum from the recent global climate strikes in September, we will rally to make climate change an urgent priority across America.

This strike is coming to Brunswick!! Join Bowdoin students and the Brunswick community to rally as part of a global strike to demand climate action!!!!

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SPEAKERS: fill out this form if you are interested. No experience necessary, we will help you workshop your stories! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdQmAI4c53o3MBZH-3iizYANtcLqIw7KYRZmXO7_6AzkIsvKw/viewform?usp=sf_link

——-

Climate change is the biggest crisis our generation faces. We are already feeling the effects here in Maine, where our waters are warming at 7 times the global average, affecting businesses and the daily lives of the people in our communities.

Individual actions are not enough! Recycling and taking shorter showers does not reach the scale of intervention we need in order to tackle the climate crisis. Human lives are at risk and the number of climate refugees is quickly growing because of the climate crisis. We need systemic change. Do your part and show up at the Brunswick Mall December 6, at noon.

Why should you come?
Be involved in a community action. Join the movement!
Get informed on the climate crisis and local activism
Hear from inspiring speakers from all ages and backgrounds
Learn more about what you can do for this crisis

Who should come?
Families and people of all ages and backgrounds are welcome
Bring your friends and coworkers

This is an easy way to make a change that’s really impactful. Show up for your communities and for your environment.

Pleasant Street Trio of Holiday Fairs

For decades three Pleasant Street-area churches have held their annual holiday fairs in December. This year, in the spirit of collaboration and sharing, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick, St. John’s Catholic School and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church are working together to present three fairs in one.

These three organizations are located within a two block area, and will be offering a whole range of opportunities for holiday cheer. Each fair will offer something a little different. Shoppers can find a silent auction with some unusual offerings at St. Paul’s, live musicians at the UU church, and Cook’s Lobster and Ale House food truck at St. John’s.

At two of the fairs, the UU and St. Paul’s, shoppers can relax and enjoy a lunch of homemade soups and breads.

Other offerings across the three locations include:

  • crafts for sale
  • tables of gently used treasures
  • home-made soups and breads for lunch
  • bake sale
  • fiber arts table with knitted, quilted and woven items
  • hand-made wreaths and greens
