RBG – Directed by Julie Cohen, Betsy West
Starring Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Gloria Steinem, Nina Totenberg
Genre: Documentary, 1hr 37mins
Rated PG

At the age of 85, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has developed a breathtaking legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. But without a definitive Ginsburg biography, the unique personal journey of this diminutive, quiet warrior’s rise to the nation’s highest court has been largely unknown, even to some of her biggest fans – until now. RBG is a revelatory documentary exploring Ginsburg ‘s exceptional life and career from Betsy West and Julie Cohen, and co-produced by Storyville Films and CNN Films.

Oliver Sacks: His Own Life

Oliver Sacks: His Own Life
Directed by Ric Burns, Cast: Oliver Sacks, Roberto Calasso, Kate Edgar, Shane Fistell
Genre: Documentary, 1hr 51mins

On January 15th, 2015, a few weeks after completing his autobiographical memoir, the writer and neurologist Oliver Sacks learned that the rare form of cancer for which he had been treated nine years earlier had returned and that he had only a few months to live. A few weeks later, he sat down with Ric Burns for a series of marathon filmed interviews in his apartment in New York. For eighty hours, across five days in February and on three more occasions in April and June – surrounded by family and friends, books and minerals, notebooks from six decades of thinking and writing about the brain –he talked about his life and work, his dreams and fears, his abiding sense of wonder at the natural world, and the place of human beings within it. He spoke with astonishing candor and clearsightedness, a profoundly gifted 81-year-old man facing death with remarkable courage and vitality while facing the end. He was determined to come to grips with what his life has meant and what it means to be, as he put it, “a sentient being on this beautiful planet.”

Drawing on these riveting and profoundly moving reflections, Oliver Sacks: His Own Life also features nearly two dozen deeply revealing and personal interviews with family members, colleagues, patients and close friends, including Jonathan Miller, Robert Silvers, Temple Grandin, Christof Koch, Robert Krulwich, Lawrence Weschler, Roberto Calasso, Paul Theroux, Isabelle Rapin, Billy Hayes, Kate Edgar, Mark Homonoff, Jonathan Sacks, Steve Silberman, Shane Fistell, Atul Gawande, and Lowell Handler, among others. The film also draws on unique access to the extensive archives of the Oliver Sacks Foundation. It is in part the biography of an extraordinary physician and writer who was dogged by his own neuroses and by the rejection of his medical colleagues but nonetheless redefined for millions of readers the nature of the human mind, through the simple act of telling profoundly compassionate stories. It is also a deeply illuminating exploration of the science of human consciousness and the nature of subjectivity, and a meditation on the deep and intimate relation between art and science and storytelling.

UUCB Cookbook Curbside Pickup

Cookbooks for Sale at the UU Church of Brunswick

The Coronavirus Obliges the Church to Sell the Books Outdoors

Wednesdays in September, 11 am to 1 pm

After months of collecting recipes from church members and friends, typing the recipes in the required format, proofreading them several times, and getting them professionally printed, the UU Church of Brunswick is now ready to sell them.  Monies raised from the sales will go towards printing costs and to church programming.

The cookbook was imagined during one of the church’s many food-related events.  Every year, the church sponsors a SoUUps On luncheon where church members share soup, bread and desserts.  This year, a couple of parishioners were wishing that they had the recipes to some of these soups, and then they overheard many others wishing the same thing.  So why not collect some of these recipes so that everyone will know how to cook these scrumptious foods?   If you’ve ever been to the UUCB Holiday Fair, you know that the public comes for the church’s delicious soups, chowders, muffins/scones, and pies as much as they come for the crafts.  The church is well-known for their tasty, nutritious cooking, but there are a few sinful recipes in the book as well.  If you’ve ever attended one of our Concerts for a Cause or other public events, you know that the church volunteers make great cookies and other snacks.  And to prove that UUCB is an equal opportunity organization, many of the good cooks and recipes come from the men of the church.

The whimsical spiral bound cookbook costs $10 and features 250 recipes divided into 6 different sections: Soups & Salads, Breads (including rolls. biscuits, muffins, and scones), Main Dishes (including breakfast/brunch, meat, seafood, vegetarian, vegan, and pasta dishes), Side dishes, Appetizers, and Desserts.  The book also contains many pages of helpful cooking hints along with a few colored pictures of the church and its events. Each recipe will feature the donor’s name, so everyone can easily locate the favorite recipes of their friends.

The original plan was to sell these cookbooks after church services and at the Holiday Fair and other events.  Since the Coronavirus has prevented the church from doing that, a plan has been devised for church members and the public to buy the book with minimal hardship and contact.

Curbside Pickup:  Membership Committee members, wearing masks, will have tables set up outside the church entry every Wednesday in September from 11am to 1pm.  No need to even get out of your car.  Just hand the seller a $10 bill or a check made out to UUCB, and she will hand you the cookbook.  Because of Covid we are asking people to have exact change to minimize the handling of money.
(Rain day: Thursdays)

If you are not able to pick the book up during the appointed time, email michaud_susan@comcast.net to make alternative arrangements.

Other BTLT Farmers’ Market Changes in Response to COVID-19

It is not just the location that will be different. We are implementing a host of other precautions we want the community to be aware of, including:

  • From 8:30-9:00 the market will only be open for shopping by high-risk populations including seniors, the immunocompromised, pregnant women, people with disabilities, and caregivers;
  • There will be no outhouse available to customers; and
  • The number of customers permitted in the market at any time will be limited, so attendees should be prepared to wait and/or come at mid- to late-morning, times that tend to be less busy.

In addition, we are asking all customers to:

  • Follow all CDC guidelines
  • Stay home if you feel ill or have been around someone who is sick
  • Wear a mask at all times
  • Bring hand sanitizer
  • Stay at least six feet away from others
  • Send only one person per family to shop
  • Keep your visit as brief as possible to assure everyone has an opportunity to shop.

People Plus Senior Health Expo "At Home" - Registration Now Open

Registration is now open for the 2020 People Plus Senior Health Expo, a premier event in our community connecting businesses and services with older adults. Last year’s sold out event had over 600 participants and over 80 tables. Both sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are available.

Despite COVID-19, we are not going to take a break this year. We are reimagining our event and we will bring the Expo to you in your home online and via video! In these unprecedented times, our goal is to continue to connect seniors with critical services. This is important now more than ever, as seniors are staying close to home. We are excited to introduce our Expo “At Home”, where attendees will discover businesses from the safety of their own homes.

Maine has the highest percentage of older adults in the country; and the Mid Coast is where this population is growing the fastest. The People Plus Senior Health brings together a variety of resources for this increasingly important segment of our community. The Expo provides an excellent opportunity to learn about products and services in the categories of medical services, fitness and health, technology, legal, community services, housing/respite care, and finance.

The Expo will kick off on Tuesday, November 10 and will include videos from each exhibitor and Facebook live events all day from our Lead Sponsors. A flu shot clinic will also be planned for that day. And People Plus will be offering an “Expo Membership Special” where new members can join that day for just $25!

Registration deadline is September 23, 2020. Visit www.peopleplusmaine.org for more information including registration form and sponsorship opportunities or call 729-0757.
