LONGFELLOW DAYS 2024 – ANNIVERSARIES

Amazing! It’s actually the 20th anniversary of Longfellow Days this year, and so we’re celebrating with lively programs throughout February ~ including parties at the beginning and end of the month.

Saturday, February 3, 1:00 PM ~ BOOK LAUNCH PARTY
We are thrilled to announce the publication of Read to Me Some Poems: 20 Years of Longfellow Days Poems from Moon Pie Press, edited by Longfellow Days founder Maryli Tiemann and poet/editor/publisher Alice Persons. You are invited to be part of our festive book launch. There’ll be music, readings by the poets, refreshments, and a chance to mingle with and get autographs from  writers represented in this new volume. Refreshments provided by The Holy Donut.

Sunday, February 4, 1:00 PM ~ THE COURSEN READINGS, PART ONE
Our four-weekend series of poetry readings by Maine writers adds a special honorary element this year. Readers will share their own writing plus that of esteemed poets we have lost since they were Longfellow Days participants themselves. On this first Sunday, former Maine Poet Laureate Betsy Sholl reads Maine’s 1st Poet Laureate, Kate Barnes; Bob MacLaughlin reads his own poetry, as well as Herb Coursen’s (after whom these Sunday readings were named); and Leila Percy will read Jerry Day Mason. Saturday, February 17, 10:00 & 11:30 AM ~ MARY & HENRY: THE LONGFELLOWS IN BRUNSWICK
This special tour of the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, co-sponsored by the Pejepscot History Center, will be led by PHC executive director Larissa Vigue Picard and Gemma Cannon. Gemma, a grief specialist and author of Voices of the Night, has discovered new material about Henry’s first wife, Mary, and more than we ever knew about Henry’s early writing. The tour through the historic home (where the Longfellows lived decades before the Chamberlains) is 60-75 minutes. Each session is limited to 15 people. Wednesday, February 21, 1:00 PM ~ SAMUEL LONGFELLOW AND A NEW VISION OF THE SPIRIT
Henry’s younger brother Samuel was a Unitarian minister and hymn writer. During his time in the ministry, he was responsible for some radical changes in Unitarian churches and in hymn writing. What had been to this point a purely Christian-Biblical orientation shifted to encompass spirituality inspired by earth, sea and sky. Our speaker, The Rev. Mark W. Harris, is the minister emeritus of First Parish in Watertown, MA and the author of several books, including Elite: Uncovering Classism in Unitarian Universalist History. So … we’re 20 years old – and  Longfellow would be 217 today. It’s party time! Ren Bernier hosts our popular poetry open mic, and we encourage you to add your voice. Come share your poem or another’s that you appreciate, and enjoy music by Bowdoin College’s Longfellows, a capella group and some delicious cakes.

Habitat for Humanity 7 Rivers Maine hosts the 3rd Annual Love to Build Art Auction from February 14^th through February 24^th. 100% of the proceeds from the auction will be spent on local affordable housing solutions in Southern Midcoast Maine.

The auction features original works from local artists and volunteers including art donated directly by local artists including Val Upham, Wayne Robbins, and John Wright, along with items donated to the ReStore.

Brunswick Maine artist Val Upham kicked off the first Love to Build Art Auction with 20 donated original paintings made on wood reclaimed from Habitat programs. Last year the event raised nearly $12,000 and continuing her support this year, Val Upham has donated two original works of art, as she says, “to raise monies that will keep giving back.”

Auction items will be on display at the Habitat for Humanity 7 Rivers Maine ReStore, 1 Chandler Drive, Bath, from 10am – 5pm, Tue-Sat.

The 3rd annual Love to Build art auction features original works from local artists and volunteers, rare donated art, and other unique items. All proceeds help build and repair homes for local families with limited incomes.

Focus on Palestine: A Community Event

The public is invited to an afternoon of history, poetry, music and theater all focusing on Palestine.

Fateh Azzam, former Middle East Regional Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights will speak about the history of Palestinian citizenship. Also included will be readings of Contemporary Palestinian poetry, Middle Eastern Music performed by Maine musicians, and excerpts from the Gaza Monologues written by Gaza teenagers in 2010 after the Israeli war on Gaza in 2008-2009. The program will end with raucous Palestinian Dabkeh line dancing to the tunes of live Palestinian folklore music and singing.

Palestinian himself, Mr. Azzam will discuss the history of Palestinian citizenship and their quest for representation, from the Ottoman period through the British mandate, the creation of Israel and its occupation of Palestine to the present day. The presentation will be followed by a discussion.

Palestine being culturally part of the broader Arab World, Maine musicians will be presenting several compositions of Middle Eastern music based in the classical Maqam tradition.

Contemporary Palestinian poetry will be read throughout the afternoon.

A thirty-minute segment of the Gaza Monologues will be presented. The full production of the Gaza Monologues which comprises 33 pieces, opened in Portland on February 3 of this year.

The event is hosted and sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church Brunswick, Peaceworks Brunswick, Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights and Peace Action Maine. The Monologues are directed by Nat Warren-White and Fateh Azzam, and performed by students from Casco Bay High School in Portland, Bowdoin College and USM with accompanying live music.
