Kajak! A Virtual Exhibit 10/20/20 - 12/20/21 at 12:00 am

Kajak! A Virtual Exhibit

Inspired by the full-sized Nunatsiavut kayak given to the College in 1891 and on display in the museum gallery for over 50 years, this exhibit explores making and using traditional kayaks from Greenland, Labrador, and beyond. It features over 20 model kayaks and umiaks, as well as associated equipment, historic film and photographs, and the centerpiece of the exhibit, a full size replica of the 1891 Kajak created for this exhibit.

You can explore the full object-based exhibit, as well as various multimedia components, online. Recordings of lectures and other virtual events during the 2020-21 academic year will also be posted here, so be sure to check back.

Nixtamalization - part of the Plant Power Lecture Series 02/08/21 at 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Nixtamalization - part of the Plant Power Lecture Series

Nixtamalization: Unlocking the Flavor and Nutrition of Corn – part of the Plant Power Lecture Series at Curtis Memorial Library

with Mihku Paul and Aaron Parker of Edgewood Nursery

Nixtamalization: Unlocking the Flavor and Nutrition of Corn – is the ancient process of cooking corn in a alkaline solution, a process that makes the resulting foods more nutritious and improves flavor and texture. Some examples of foods made from nixtamalized corn are: tortillas, tamales, hominy and posole. In this workshop we will cover the chemistry and history of nixtamalization, then we will move to a hands on demonstration where we will go through the whole process from dry corn to tortillas, as well as a couple other finished dishes.
