Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Youth in MaineSASSMM (Sexual Assault Support Services of Midcoast Maine) is a community organization with offices in Brunswick, Rockland, and Belfast. We provide information and support to children and adults who are directly affected by sexual violence, as well as their loved ones and the larger community. We are offering a free, virtual training: Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Youth in Maine. The same event will be offered on two dates: December 9th, 2020 from 10-11:30 AM and December 10th, 2020 from 3-4:30 PM. This training will build knowledge and skills related to exploitation and trafficking of youth in Maine, including an overview of the efforts currently in place to support victims and survivors. This training is created for anyone working with youth in residential, school, behavioral health, crisis, or community settings. Individuals working in Eastern Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties will have priority registration. Sadly, we know that youth in Maine are experiencing sexual exploitation and trafficking: according to the Maine Human Trafficking Needs Assessment in 2015, there are an estimated 200-300 victims of sex trafficking in Maine per year, most of whom are between the ages of 14-30. Knowing that the risk of victimization increases during a social crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to understand this issue and to have the knowledge and skills to get help for youth who may be experiencing exploitation.
