Matthew Alexander Henson: First African-American at the North Pole

Matthew Henson spent years exploring the Arctic with Robert E. Peary and in 1909 he was the only other American to stand with Peary at the North Pole. Henson was excluded from receiving the many honors showered on white members of the expedition. Only near the end of his life did Henson received recognition for his remarkable career as an Arctic explorer. This exhibit is in conjunction with the AF/AM/50 celebrations, celebrating fifty years of Africana Studies, the African American Society, and the John Brown Russwurm African American Center.

Pleasant Street Trio of Holiday Fairs

For decades three Pleasant Street-area churches have held their annual holiday fairs in December. This year, in the spirit of collaboration and sharing, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick, St. John’s Catholic School and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church are working together to present three fairs in one.

These three organizations are located within a two block area, and will be offering a whole range of opportunities for holiday cheer. Each fair will offer something a little different. Shoppers can find a silent auction with some unusual offerings at St. Paul’s, live musicians at the UU church, and Cook’s Lobster and Ale House food truck at St. John’s.

At two of the fairs, the UU and St. Paul’s, shoppers can relax and enjoy a lunch of homemade soups and breads.

Other offerings across the three locations include:

  • crafts for sale
  • tables of gently used treasures
  • home-made soups and breads for lunch
  • bake sale
  • fiber arts table with knitted, quilted and woven items
  • hand-made wreaths and greens
