Matthew Henson spent years exploring the Arctic with Robert E. Peary and in 1909 he was the only other American to stand with Peary at the North Pole. Henson was excluded from receiving the many honors showered on white members of the expedition. Only near the end of his life did Henson received recognition for his remarkable career as an Arctic explorer. This exhibit is in conjunction with the AF/AM/50 celebrations, celebrating fifty years of Africana Studies, the African American Society, and the John Brown Russwurm African American Center.

“Climate change is the biggest crisis our generation faces. We are already feeling the effects here in Maine, where our waters are warming at 7 times the global average, affecting businesses and the daily lives of the people in our communities.
Individual actions are not enough! Recycling and taking shorter showers does not reach the scale of intervention we need in order to tackle the climate crisis. Human lives are at risk and the number of climate refugees is quickly growing because of the climate crisis. We need systemic change. Do your part and show up at the Brunswick Mall December 6, at noon.
Why should you come?
Who should come?
This is an easy way to make a change that’s really impactful. Show up for your communities and for your environment.”
