Matthew Alexander Henson: First African-American at the North Pole

Matthew Henson spent years exploring the Arctic with Robert E. Peary and in 1909 he was the only other American to stand with Peary at the North Pole. Henson was excluded from receiving the many honors showered on white members of the expedition. Only near the end of his life did Henson received recognition for his remarkable career as an Arctic explorer. Exhibition: In the Round: Ancient Art from All Sides

This exhibition examines the geometry and design of ancient art and the efforts by artists to represent depth and movement by influencing the vantage point of the viewer. By simply flipping a coin, rotating a vase, or walking around a sculpture, the composition changes and new perspectives emerge. Using artifacts from the ancient Mediterranean, In the Round explores early innovations in representational art.

Shine A Light - Art and Written Works from Inside the Prison Industrial Complex

Founded in 2001, College Guild provides free non-traditional correspondence courses that connect incarcerated people with a community beyond prison walls, fostering mutual respect through a shared passion for learning.

The very special Gallery Show of Art and Written Word represents some of the 8000 prisoners from all 50 states  that have been offered the opportunity to participate in course work with College Guild and our many volunteers.

Why does College Guild exist? Because the United States has a prison problem and education reduces recidivism.

We are 5% of the world’s population, but hold 25% of the world’s prisoners.

The total incarcerated population in the U.S. is a staggering 2.4 million— a 500% increase over the past 30 years.

One in every 108 adults was in prison or jail in 2012.

One in 28 American children has a parent behind bars.

At the end of 2007, 1 in 31 adults was behind bars, on probation or on parole.

Currently, 65 million Americans have a criminal record.

There are more people behind bars today for a drug offense than there were in 1980 for all offenses combined.

The U.S. spent $80 billion on incarceration in 2010 alone.
