Exhibition: The Nineteenth Century: American and European Art

This exhibition features outstanding nineteenth-century paintings and sculptures from the Museum’s permanent collection and highlights collectors such as James Bowdoin III, George William Boyd, and Mary and Harriet Walker who were instrumental in building a fine arts collection at Bowdoin College.

Tuesday–Saturday: 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Thursday: 10:00 a.m.–8:30 p.m.

Special Sunday hours: 12:00 noon–5:00 p.m. (June 29–November 10, 2019)

Closed on Mondays and national holidays.The Bowdoin College Museum of Art is open to the public free of charge, although donations are welcome. The Museum is wheelchair accessible through the Pavilion entrance. Bowdoin College Museum of Art is a member of The Maine Art Museum Trail

Music on the Mall

Music on the Mall, Downtown Brunswick’s Summer Concert Series, presents FREE concerts Wednesday evenings at 6 PM throughout the summer on the Brunswick Town Mall (Green- see map). Grab a blanket or chair, bring your family and friends, order a picnic dinner or dine at a local Brunswick restaurant, then relax and enjoy great music. FREE Admission.

Exhibition: Art Purposes: Object Lessons for the Liberal Arts

Sharing personal discoveries, challenging assumptions, probing identities, and shaping communities, artists engage their audiences with the contemporary world. Presenting exceptional works of art since 1970 from the collection, many on view for the first time, this exhibition highlights art’s purposes as tool for observation, inquiry, and learning in a liberal arts context. Selections include works by Jenny Holzer, Alfredo Jaar, Glen Ligon, Chris Ofili, Nancy Spero, Andy Warhol, William Wegman, Cui Xiuwen, and many others.

EXHIBITION: Emerging Modernisms, American and European Art, 1900–1950

Drawn from Bowdoin’s collection, this exhibition addresses the birth of revolutionary artistic strategies, including abstraction, conceptually-driven work, and the use of photography and commercial printing techniques. Such new materials and methods reflected a world transformed by technology, world war, and the growing demand for equality for women and individuals of color.

Points of View Art Gallery exhibits for July

Points of View Art Gallery hosts Barbara Bean and Jackie Melissas for Under the Influence,  with Barbara’s colorful floral paintings and Jackie’s free-expression ceramics. On the 3rd floor, Carolyn Judson and guest artists Cathy Bloom, Betsy Fear, and Nan Moran exhibit whimsical ceramic Tiles and Beyond

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Teens, Grades 10-12

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Teens (MBSR-T) teaches skills and strategies that encourage positive self-care. Join us for this free 7-week course of 1.5-hour weekly group sessions.

Free information night for parents and youth will take place on July 1 at 6 p.m. The free session for students in grades 10-12 will take place from July 8-August 19 from 6-7:30 p.m.

American String Quartet

Sparking inspiration from the medieval legend of El Cid, composer Zhou Tian writes, “I unconsciously married my musical roots as a Chinese-American with my newfound love of Spanish music” in his 2016 work, Viaje– a self-styled “nine-minute thrill ride.” Crossing the Pyrenees from Spain to France, the American String Quartet continue their grand tour via Maurice Ravel’s string quartet, alternately sumptuous and playful, before alighting in Vienna – where Beethoven wove a Russian theme into the third of his “Razumovsky” quartets.
