Exhibition: In the Round: Ancient Art from All Sides

This exhibition examines the geometry and design of ancient art and the efforts by artists to represent depth and movement by influencing the vantage point of the viewer. By simply flipping a coin, rotating a vase, or walking around a sculpture, the composition changes and new perspectives emerge. Using artifacts from the ancient Mediterranean, In the Round explores early innovations in representational art.

Exhibition: Chinese Ceramics, Jades, and Paintings

Rarely seen masterpieces from Bowdoin’s collection offer insights into the materials, technologies, and changing tastes that shaped Chinese art over the past five centuries. Selections range from a Ming-dynasty porcelain box and an eighteenth-century jade bowl from the Qianlong Emperor’s personal collection to a recently acquired work by one of modern China’s most revered painters, Chen Yifei.

UUCB Concerts for a Cause: Cindy Kallet & Grey Larsen

Folk artists Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen will perform at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick on June 15, 2019 at 7:30pm.  This will be the last concert of the 2018-19 Concerts for a Cause series that raises money for local charities.  This season’s beneficiaries are The Gathering Place and the Brunswick Teen Center.

Cindy Kallett and Grey Larsen Cindy is a superb singer, guitarist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Grey is one of America’s finest players of the Irish flute and tin whistle, as well as an accomplished singer and concertina, fiddle, piano and harmonium player. As composers each contributes to the tapestry of contemporary folk and world music as it flourishes in the US today. Together, they weave songs and tunes of vibrant color and rich texture.

Scott Alarik of The Boston Globe calls Cindy “…one of folk music’s most respected songwriters… provocative, heart-wise, and original …a brilliant guitarist….” Mike Joyce of the Washington Post calls Grey “… a gifted multi-instrumentalist who consistently demonstrates his melodic finesse,” while The New Mexico Daily describes his playing as “positively spellbinding.” Cindy and Grey have also appeared with host Andrea Seabrook on National Public Radio’s “Weekend All Things Considered.”

The duo’s repertoire includes Cindy’s sparkling original songs, distinctive settings of traditional Irish music, Scandinavian fiddle duets, old-time fiddle and guitar tunes from southern Indiana, and new music that Cindy and Grey are inventing together. There is plenty of variety and breadth of musical territory here, all deeply rooted in folk traditions, and interwoven with the renaissance and baroque counterpoint in which both Cindy and Grey, coincidentally, were immersed while growing up. In addition to their beautiful vocals and instrumental talents, they have plenty of stories that put the music into a personal context.

Here are some samples of their music:

Tide and the River Rising
Courage
T Billy’s Jig/Have a Drink
Back When We Were All Machines

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, Students/Children: $5. Available at the church office, Gulf of Maine Books, or online at https://kallet.brownpapertickets.com/.  Two-thirds of the net proceeds of the 2018-2019.
