Pihcintu Chorus Concert

The Pihcintu Chorus is a multi-national refugee and immigrant girls’ chorus based in Portland, Maine.  It was started by songwriter Con Fullam as a way to help restart the young lives of kids who had seen too much of war, famine, and refugee camps.   These amazing young people have performed all over the United States, including the White House and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.  There are lots of videos on YouTube if you’re curious, but hearing them in person and meeting them afterward is nothing short of inspiring.  They are fabulous!

Family Ministries at St. Paul’s is organizing special 45-minute pre-concert activities on the same afternoon (2:30-3:15) for students and their families.  The vision for these crucial minutes with the young people (and hopefully parents as well, especially if the students are on the young side) will be a conversation about how they can be open and welcoming to our guests who come from a variety of different countries, ones very different from ours.  Please call the church office at 207-725-5342 if you wish to participate in the pre-concert activities so we can have enough supplies for everyone.

There will be a reception following the concert, at which you can meet and talk with the members of the group.   We hope you can join us for a very special and unforgettable afternoon.  A free-will offering will be taken, all of which will benefit the Pihcintu Chorus.

UUCB Concerts for a Cause: ELLIS PAUL Returns

Back by popular demand, Ellis Paul, one of Maine’s most lauded singer-songwriters, will perform again for the Concerts for a Cause series on September 29th at 7:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick.  Two-thirds of all proceeds will be donated to two local charities: The Gathering Place and The Brunswick Teen Center.

Born and raised in Aroostook County, Paul has a literate, provocative and urbanely romantic folk-pop style that helped ignite the folk revival of the 1990’s. Not only has Paul won 14 Boston Music Awards, but he is an artist/cartoonist, has published 3 books, played thousands of shows and released 19 albums and a documentary film.  His pop music songs have appeared in movies and on television, bridging the gap between the modern folk sound and the populist traditions of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger.  In 2015 Paul was invited to give the commencement address at the University of Maine and was given an honorary doctorate.

As Roberta B. Schwartz states in her review in the Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange, “Ellis Paul is one of the best singer/songwriters of his generation. And for many of us he is the face of contemporary folk music—few are as smart, as literate and as poetic as Paul.”

Indeed, he is all that, and in a very real sense, even more. He’s an observer, a philosopher, and an astute storyteller who shares with his listeners the life lessons he’s learned, and in turn, life lessons they ought to heed as well. By affirming and defining who he is, Ellis Paul affirms and uncovers the essence of us all.

Tickets: $20 in advance, $22 at the door. Available at the church office (729-8515), at Gulf of Maine Books (729-5083), or ONLINE at
