Longfellow Days 2018

LONGFELLOW DAYS 2018
“THE HEART HATH ITS OWN MEMORY”
This year we explore the phenomenon of nostalgia, of looking back, through the lens of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The poet was fascinated with heroic figures of antiquity, and he wrote sensitively, emotionally about his own life experiences and the aging process. We will also look back at Longfellow’s reputation, the ways in which his talents have been viewed through the decades.

Sunday, February 4, 1:00 PM | THE COURSEN READINGS, PART ONE
Many superb writers have graced Brunswick and its vicinity through the years. We feature twelve of them in a four-part Sunday series named for the late poet and Longfellow Days’ friend, Herbert Coursen. Each has been nominated by a poet from a prior year. We begin with Kristen Case, Maureen Thorson, and Beau Williams. Refreshments. Fireplace Room, Curtis Memorial Library.

Thursday, February 8,  10:00 AM | COMMUNITY POETRY READING AT THORNTON OAKS
This informal gathering, facilitated by poets Ted and Ruth Bookey, is open to everyone, so please bring and share
a poem. Refreshments. Merrymeeting Room, Thornton Oaks, 25 Thornton Way (off Baribeau Drive).

Sunday, February 11, 1:00 PM | THE COURSEN READINGS, PART TWO
Longfellow Days continues with Maine poets, Jim Glenn Thatcher and Sheila Wellehan, and New Hampshire’s Sarah Anderson, as featured readers. Refreshments with the poets follow.  Fireplace Room, Curtis Memorial Library.

Wednesday, February 14, 12:15 PM | THE CHARM OF READING AND REREADING
Tricia Welsch, Professor of Cinema Studies, is also a passionate, prodigious reader – and she’s writing a book about it. She will share a preview of Loose Leaves, which reflects on a lifetime of reading, here talking about adult rereading of childhood favorites like Heidi and Little Women, and leading a conversation about the books we treasure. There’ll be Valentine’s Day treats. Morrell Room, Curtis Memorial Library.

Saturday, February 17, 11:00 AM | MORNING AT THE MOVIES
Rather than a Longfellow film, we’re presenting the fourth (1994) film adaptation of one of his contemporary’s classic works: Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Directed by Gillian Armstrong, it features Christian Bale, Claire Danes, and Winona Ryder. Tricia Welsch returns to provide context and lead discussion around the screening. Smith Auditorium, Sills Hall, Bowdoin College

Saturday, February 17, 1:00-3:00 PM | AFTERNOON AT THE CHAMBERLAIN MUSEUM
Longfellow Days and Pejepscot Historical Society co-host unique tours of one of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s residences in Brunswick – later home to Maine Governor and Civil War General Joshua Chamberlain.. Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, 226 Maine Street.

Sunday, February 18, 1:00 PM | THE COURSEN READINGS, PART THREE
Come in out of the cold. Maine college faculty poets Derek Meader (SMCC), Ellen Taylor (UMA), and Shana Youngdahl (UMF) present their work. Refreshments. Fireplace Room, Curtis Memorial Library.

Monday, February 19, 10:00 AM | COMMUNITY POETRY READING AT THE HIGHLANDS
Ted and Ruth Bookey facilitate an informal gathering for the area community to share favorite poems (your own or others’) at The Highlands. Refreshments. Georgetown Parlor, Maine Lodge, 30 Governors Way, Topsham.

Wednesday, February 21, 7:00 PM | WE SALUTE YOU!
Come participate in a public read-in as we parse the quintessential “looking back” poem, Moritori Salutamos, which Longfellow wrote for the fiftieth reunion of his Bowdoin College graduating class. Gary Lawless, poet and co-owner of Gulf of Maine books, will emcee. The Brunswick Inn, 165 Park Row.

Friday, February 23, 7 PM | HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HENRY!
We’re cheating; he’d be 211 in four days, but who’s counting? Gary Lawless is back as our featured reader for an everyone’s-welcome poetry open mic. Come read your work and enjoy some birthday cake. Unitarian Universalist Church, 1 Middle Street.

Sunday, February 25, 10:00 AM | LITERARY CHAPEL SERVICE
The theme for the ecumenical service, led by Rev. Sylvia Stocker, is “Poetry Through the Lifespan.” Visit the Bible that Longfellow signed and donated to his church in 1878. Unitarian Universalist Church, 1 Middle Street

Sunday, February 25, 1:00 PM | THE COURSEN READINGS, PART FOUR
The final installment features poets Dave Morrison, Jefferson Navicky, and Mihku Paul. Refreshments. Fireplace Room, Curtis Memorial Library

Tuesday, February 27, 4:00 PM | HISTORY OF HENRY IN BRUNSWICK
We have invited John Cross, Secretary of Development and College Relations at Bowdoin, and an unofficial historian of the College, to talk about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s experience in Brunswick during the 1820s and ‘30s, first as a Bowdoin student and later as an influential faculty member. Note:  This date is HWL’s actual birthday, so bring a kazoo or confetti to celebrate. Unitarian Universalist Church, 1 Middle Street

Our 2018 theme, the quote at the top, comes from Longfellow’s 1880 poem “From My Arm-Chair.”

Longfellow Days is a program of the Brunswick Downtown Association, with support from Bowdoin College, The Brunswick Inn,
Hannaford, and the Nathaniel Davis Fund. All programs are free of charge.

For more info, visit: www.oasisfreeclinics.org

Our performers include:

Jud CaswellImage title

Jud is a little bit like a one-man folk festival. You’ve got your banjo picking, your Irish drinking songs, a rack of acoustic instruments, and a deep catalog of award-winning originals. He’s often compared to James Taylor and David Wilcox, but his songs draw on a long musical history and wide-ranging influences from jazz and Piedmont blues to contemporary folk and rock.

Jud is a lifelong musician, but it wasn’t until 2004 that he was able to pursue music full-time. By 2008, Jud had made a name for himself on the national folk circuit, playing folk festivals from Texas to Oregon and winning some of the best songwriting contests in the country. His 2007 release “Blackberry Time” was a folk DJ favorite.

Since that time, Jud has continued to work as a performer, teacher and recording engineer. With the new CD, he is beginning to tour again, with dates booked in the mid-Atlantic and the northeast and more in the works. He is grateful, as always, to be making a living in music while making a life in Maine.

Cilantro

Soaring Harmonies and passion for the music best describes a performance by Cilantro, the Duo. Margot Frost and Earl Bigelow execute intricate and impressive guitar work as they sing their thoughtful and personal original songs mixed with a wide range of popular music.  Standards like Misty and Look of Love to the classic Golden Slumbers medley from the Beatles White Album come alive with their performance.

They live in Bowdoinham where Earl is owner and operator of Watersong Music, a recording studio and teaching/performance space. Margot is an Advanced Eagala Certified Equine specialist and co owner of Healing Hooves LLC in Bowdoinham. The pair also heads up Band Cilantro, which consists of five pieces that can be seen and heard all over Maine in the summer months.

Kat Logan

Kat has been perforImage titleming music all of her life and was trained and has a musical degree as an organist.  But her real love is singing folk music.  She sings like an angel and plays the accordion, as well as the guitar, piano, banjo and a portable pump organ.

Red Beans and RiceImage title

Red Beans & Rice is a loose affiliation of two — a (mostly) acoustic duo playing an entertaining and engaging mix of blues, old and new.  Mr. Rice (Carter Ruff) plays slide guitar and has been known to howl at the moon.  “Red” Beans (Dave Hunt) is a gentler fellow with a touch on the guitar that is sweetly complex, and a voice as smooth as butter on a slow burn.
