In the My Next Career Move class, you will learn how your current skills connect to future careers, identify high-growth job fields, explore education and training options, and strengthen your resume for a targeted job search.New Ventures Maine logo

The My Next Career Move class is open to people of all ages and incomes. Anyone is welcome who is interested in building your career and finding the job that is right for you. Whether you are unemployed, underemployed, or considering a career change, this class will help you achieve career success.

The Brunswick class will be held on Mondays from 5:30 – 8:00 PM, meeting from October 16 through November 13 at the University College Bath/Brunswick campus at Brunswick Landing.

Pre-registration is required, and there is no fee for the trainings. For more information or to register, contact Erica Quin-Easter at New Ventures Maine at 386-1664, email erica.quineaster@maine.edu, or register online at newventuresmaine.org/schedules/next-career-move/.

Erica Quin-Easter, trainer for the class, says, “When you feel stuck in a dead-end job or frustrated with a fruitless job search, it’s hard to stay positive and take steps towards a better future. This class helps you explore your options, connect with resources, and put your best foot forward to get the job that’s right for you.”

Participants in previous career planning classes with New Ventures Maine say:

  • This class made me accountable on action steps to pursue a new job. I went home each week feeling energized and hopeful.
  • Thanks to the class, I have a far greater idea how to proceed and succeed in finding and obtaining the career I want.
  • The blend of approaches was helpful: handouts, PowerPoint, white board, conversation, and special guest speakers.
  • The workbook, combined with classroom instruction, relevant homework, and classmate camaraderie, kept me on task in devoting more time into proactively thinking about my career, instead of reacting to whatever is available.
  • I benefited from the supportive environment, encouragement from classmates, tools and job search sites, and goal setting.
  • The class used real world examples, meeting the group members where they were and respecting that no matter what.
  • I do not feel so alone and confused about my job search and interests. I have hope for the future and that I can do it.
  • I incorporated my lessons from the class into my job interview – and got the job!

The month-long My Next Career Move course will connect class participants with guest speakers from various sectors as well as community resources to support further education and training. Graduates of My Next Career Move are eligible to apply for the University of Maine at Augusta GEN Scholarship, to be used at any UMA location.

For people whose schedule or location makes an in-person class difficult or who would prefer to take the course from the convenience of their own computer, New Ventures Maine also offers an online option. The online cohort of My Next Career Move begins October 11, and the registration deadline for the online class is Friday, October 6. To register for the online class, visit: newventuresmaine.org/schedules/next-career-move-2/

Messiah Sing-Along with The Oratorio Chorale

Handel’s Messiah has been beloved by audiences since its 1743 sold-out debut. Anchored by the thunderous “Hallelujah Chorus,” it is a pillar of Western music – a masterpiece that must be experienced live. This October, residents of the Highlands can join in the magic by singing along.

Emily Isaacson, Artistic Director of the Oratorio Chorale, will provide a brief history of the piece and then will lead guests in an hour of festive and non-threatening sight-singing. Chorale accompanist Scott Wheatley and soprano soloist Mary Sullivan will provide piano support, and scores will be provided.

UUCB Concerts for a Cause: under the song tree

A rare reunion concert of “under the song tree,” a trio of three of Maine’s favorite singer-songwriters who have not performed together in over 10 years: Dan Merrill, Anni Clark, and Lynn Deeves. Their concert features acoustic guitars, flute, harmonica, a variety of percussive instruments, and stellar three-part harmonies.

In 2000 the trio got together and recorded a CD, “under the song tree LIVE.” The CD clearly demonstrates their talents as seasoned musicians and songwriters, and their strength as a trio of performers who are passionate about music. In 2002, NH’s Jam Music Magazine readers voted them “Folk Artists of the Year.”

Lynn Deeves DrummingMaine singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Lynn Deeves honed her early musical and stage chops on the New England, high energy rock scene and has since released 4 independent CD’s. After 17 years of singing in the top-40 club circuit, receiving Maine Female Vocalist of the Year, Lynn Deeves began writing her own songs with folk, blues, and gospel influences. Rich, soulful vocals combined with a sharp wit, and dynamic stage presence, have created a continually expanding NE fan base. The Portland Press Herald says “…5 star stage presence…this gal’s got a set of pipes…” Deeves has opened for Cheryl Wheeler, Janis Ian, Catie Curtis, Ellis Paul, America and many others.

Anni ClarkAnni Clark is part folk, part blues, sometimes pop, but all parts original. For over 20 years this Maine native has pleased audiences nationwide with her captivating voice, mindful lyrics, and excellent guitar playing. She has received Female Artist of the Year on multiple occasions. Clark is a Maine native who has recorded seven successful albums and shared stages with international acts including Shawn Colvin, Richie Havens and Cheryl Wheeler. The Kennebec Journal wrote “what I love about Clark is that she can have you laughing one moment and close to tears the next with the honest emotions in her material.”

Dan MerrillDan Merrill creates intimate, honest lyrics and soaring vocals set to pop, funk, acoustic rock, folk and singer-songwriter styles. During his acoustic beginning in the 90’s, Dan won the coveted “Newfolk” songwriter’s award at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas in 1995. In 2000, in addition to playing with Under the Song Tree, he joined forces with the Pennsylvania progressive rock band, Simon Apple which yielded the band’s first U.S. Top 10 single in 2005 – “Hold Me” [Like A Lover] written by Dan. He was also awarded JPF (Just Plain Folks), “Male Vocalist of the Year.”. And now, it all comes full circle with Dan returning to his acoustic singer/ songwriter roots in his latest CD “Tomorrow to Yesterday”

DETROIT – by Lisa D’Amour- The Professional Ensemble

October 12 – 29

Thursday – Saturday at 7:30
Sunday at 2:00

All tickets Pay-What-You-Want

A dark comedy by The Theater Project’s Professional Ensemble, directed by Christopher Price.

In a first-ring suburb just outside a city that might be Detroit, Ben and Mary see sudden signs of life at the deserted house next door and invite their new neighbors Sharon and Kenny over for a barbecue. As the action unfolds we learn that Sharon and Kenny met at rehab, neither is employed, and they don’t own a stick of furniture. The quintessential American backyard party quickly turns into something more dangerous—and filled with potential.

“A sharp X-ray of the embattled American psyche as well as a smart, tart critique of the country’s fraying social fabric, Ms. D’Amour’s dark comedy is as rich and addictively satisfying as a five-layer dip served up with a brimming bowl of tortilla chips.” —NY Times.

Free Career Planning Class with New Ventures Maine

Starting Monday, October 16, New Ventures Maine will offer My Next Career Move, a free month-long class to help you take charge of your career and create an action plan to achieve success.

Register today, as space is limited to 15 people to ensure a small-group experience: newventuresmaine.org/schedules/next-career-move/
