Newsies

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Disney’s Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets.

Inspired by the real-life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against powerful newspaper publishers. This timely and fresh fictionalized adaptation addresses age-old themes of social injustice, exploitative labor practices, and David-versus-Goliath struggles as the young learn to harness their power against a corrupt establishment.

This all singing, all dancing, high-energy show features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York” and “Santa Fe.”

Show times at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Call 207-725-8769 or visit www.msmt.org for tickets!

Sensory Friendly Performance of Alice in Wonderland

Maine State Music Theatre is committed to helping young audiences experience the magic of theatre by providing Theatre for Young Audiences performances each season. However, a standard theatrical experience may not always be accessible for children with social, cognitive, or physical challenges.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Anna-Maria Moggio Foundation, Maine State Music Theatre will create sensory-friendly performance of Alice in Wonderland during the 2017 season designed for families with children with autism or other disabilities that create sensory sensitivities.

The performance will take place in the 22 Elm Street Rehearsal Hall – a performance environment that is safe and accessible for children who may be uncomfortable in the theatre’s more traditional main stage setting at the 600-seat Pickard Theater.

The project – inspired by a 2016 successful pilot performance – gives the theatre the opportunity to demonstrate further its commitment to be an inclusive, supportive community providing theatrical experience for all patrons.

There is no admission fee for these events but reservations are required. Seating is limited. Call 207-725-8769 to reserve seats.

Alice in Wonderland

Welcome to Wonderland where everything is curiouser and curiouser!  Live on stage, this fun-loving musical by Marc Robin and Curt Dale Clark brings Lewis Carroll’s beloved classic to life as Alice journeys into a world of talking animals, the Mad Hatter’s frantic tea party, the watch-carrying White Rabbit, and a trial headed by The Queen of Hearts during which Alice suddenly finds herself the accused!  This is a modern view to an old classic, where nonsense makes quite good sense. Running time approximately 1 hour.

Show times at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 4:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Call 207-725-8769 or visit www.msmt.org for tickets!

Save a Stray 5K

Formerly Paws for a Cause, SAVE A STRAY 5K is a event to raise money for shelter animals at Coastal Humane Society of Brunswick and sister shelter Lincoln County Animal Shelter of Edgecomb. Our two wonderful shelters merged in the summer of 2016. Nearly 3,500 animals come through our doors every year, and 97% of those animals leave our facilities for loving homes. We serve 40 towns along Maine’s mid-coast, covering over 1,000 square miles and over 150,00 people. But our adopters come from all over! Join us, and bring your friends (both human and canine!) for a beautiful August morning in Maine to support shelter pets. Many of us have shelter pets, and they mean the world to us. Here’s our chance to make surethese animals get everything they need until they make it home where they belong.

Please ask your friends and family to support you in SAVE A STRAY. Every little bit counts! Did you know $25 can feed 10 cats for a week? That $50 can vaccinate 5 animals? That $100 can spay or neuter 3 animals? Donations can be made quickly and easily online (paper pledge sheets are available by request).

Whether you’re running the 5K through downtown Freeport or enjoying a shorter walk route with friends, your participation makes the difference for our shelter residents.

Hospice Volunteer Training Program

CHANS Home Health & Hospice is offering a free training course for individuals interested in becoming a Hospice Volunteer. The Volunteer Training Program will begin on September 7 and run for ten consecutive weeks on Thursdays, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Classes will be held in the conference room at CHANS Hospice located at 45 Baribeau Drive in Brunswick. A completed application and pre-training interview is required before being admitted to the program.

This free training prepares individuals to deal compassionately and sensitively with end-of-life issues in a volunteer capacity. Topics covered will include an introduction to the hospice philosophy, ethical issues, communication, spirituality, grief and loss, and other topics that facilitate the therapeutic relationship between the patient, family, and volunteer.

Once certified a Hospice Volunteer will be able to offer individualized support, through the CHANS Home Health & Hospice, to a person with a terminal illness, and their family, during the last phases of life. Volunteers serve as companions to the terminally ill and may be a supportive listener, run errands, and/or provide respite for caregivers. Volunteers may also be in contact with family and friends after a loved one has died in order to provide grief support. Volunteers are supported by the Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, the Hospice Volunteer community, and continuing educational offerings.Chans Home Health & Hospice logo

For more information, or to register for the training, please call Margaret Zillioux, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator at (207) 721-1271, or email mzillioux@midcoasthealth.com. Applications will be accepted through August 25.

UUCB Concerts for a Cause: LIPBONE REDDING

Storyteller, songwriter, guitarist and voice-strumentalist Lawrence “Lipbone” Redding will appear at Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick on Saturday, September 9th at 7:30pm. Lipbone is most noted for his ability to vocally imitate trombones, trumpets, bass and percussion and incorporate them into live musical performances.  His original songs effervesce with New Orleans jazz, swing, soul and funk.

Despite humble beginnings as a New York City subway singer, Lipbone has released 8 albums and over 20 live recordings and now performs in festivals, theaters and concert halls all across America and Europe. His music is rich and soulful because it comes from a life of travel and fascinating experiences.

A one-man orchestra with no electronic effects, his natural human sounds of throat singing, bass and beat-boxing, and his astonishingly realistic lip-tromboning are a must-experience event—as he weaves his stories with funky rhythms, catchy melodies, brash humor, soulful singing, and inventive guitar playing.    You can hear a sample of his music here:  vimeo.com/191295166

An engaging and entertaining show for all ages and musical tastes, Lipbone performances always have folks tapping, clapping and dancing the night away.

TICKETS:

$15 in advance, $18 at the door, $8 Students/Children
Available at the church office (729-8515), Gulf of Maine Books, or online at http://lipbone.brownpapertickets.com.

Proceeds from the Concerts for a Cause series raises money for church programming and local charities.

Free comprehensive money management class with New Ventures Maine

Starting Monday, September 11, New Ventures Maine will offer My Money Works, a free five-week class to help you gain the skills and confidence to stretch your money, pay your bills, reduce your debt, find money for savings, plan for retirement, and set personal financial goals.

Register today, as space is limited to 15 people to ensure a small-group experience:

newventuresmaine.org/schedules/my-money-works-70

The class will be held on Mondays from 5:30-8:00 PM, meeting for four sessions from September 11 through October 2. Classes take place in Orion Hall at the University College of Bath/Brunswick at 12 Sewall Street in Brunswick Landing.

Pre-registration is required, and there is no fee for the training. For more information or to register, contact Erica Quin-Easter at New Ventures Maine at 386-1664, email erica.quineaster@maine.edu, or register online at newventuresmaine.org/schedules/my-money-works-70.

My Money Works is open to individuals, couples, and people of all ages and incomes. Anyone who is interested in gaining greater control over your money is welcome.

Erica Quin-Easter, trainer for the class, says, “This course helps you take control over your money, instead of your money controlling you. Whether you are trying to make ends meet now or planning for your long-term goals, you will leave this class with a plan to achieve greater financial stability.”

Participants in recent classes say about My Money Works:

  • I have a much better grasp on the things that are important to think about and keep track of and plan for my money. After the last class, I opened three new savings accounts so that I can reach my goals of being more stable throughout the year (short term savings), have an emergency fund (long term), and save for paying my school bills.
  • I feel like I have the tools I need now to be more financially responsible. I plan on refreshing my budget and sticking to it. I also plan on starting an emergency fund.
  • Thanks to this training, I will be able to repair my credit and move forward to improving my financial health.
  • Everything taught in this class was all new to me, and yet it’s all important information that I need to know in life and will be able to pass onto my spouse and kids.
  • The “real life” way everything was presented in the class made a difference. It made it easy to relate.
  • The group was supportive and respectful, easy to talk to. It was a great class with a wealth of information.
  • Taking the class has made me more positive about my financial future.

Successful completion of the My Money Works class also meets one of the requirements for the Rainy Day Savings program, a matched-savings program that enables eligible individuals and families to double their savings with a matching grant of up to $300 for emergency expenses, as well as requirements for the Family Development Account program, a matched-savings program to save for business development, your college education, first-time home ownership, car purchase or repair, home repair, or emergency savings.New Ventures Maine logo

Tea With Harriet: August 17, 2017

Bowdoin College is proud to present a monthly entertaining lecture series on the life and letters of Harriet Beecher Stowe. The event is held each third Thursday of the month from 1-2:30 pm at 63 Federal Street, the home of Harriet and Calvin Stowe and their children from 1850-52. The theme of the August Tea will be a series of stories, recreating the summer of 1882, when the lives of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry Ward Beecher, Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Austin Dickinson, and Martin Johnson Heade all intertwined in unusual ways. Due to the immense popularity of this program, reservations are now required and seats are filled on a first-come, first served basis. Please call 207-725-3155 to leave your name and the number of seats needed.

Stowe House guide Cathi Belcher will read some witty excerpts from The American Woman’s Home, a domestic science book Stowe co-authored with her sister, Catharine. The event is free and open to the public. No reservations required.

BDA Speaker Series: Bill Green

The BDA Speaker series features Bill Green:
Bill Green – Maine’s Community Anchor”

Date: September, 28, 2017
Time: 7:30 AM
Location: The historic sanctuary of First Parish Church

Bill Green has been in the television industry for four decades. Join us for highlights of feature stories that he has shared on WCSH TV6 during 15 years of “Bill Green’s Maine”.
                                                              _____________________
Bill Green is a lifelong Mainer. Born in Bangor (1953) he was educated in Bangor schools (Bangor High 1971) and the University of Maine (1976). As a freshman at UMaine, he worked as a cameraman at WLBZ 2 on Eddie Driscoll’s “My Backyard” and “Dialing for Dollars” shows.

Bill recalls, “The first night I worked, March 17, 1972, I was asked to stay late and run camera for the news. As they played the opening music, and the camera light came on, I remember thinking, I’m going to do this until I’m 65.”

Bill debuted as a sportscaster on WLBZ 2 in 1975. He moved to Portland in 1981 where he anchored weekend sports statewide on WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2. During this period, Bill began to flourish as a feature reporter and developed an expertise in recreation and the outdoors.

In 1993, Bill came off the anchor desk to produce feature stories and documentaries, including 10 documentaries on Maine and the environment under the banner “Color Me Green,” in addition to his weekly features, “Green Outdoors” and “My Hometown.”

In 2000, Bill Green launched an original series, “Bill Green’s Maine.” This program airs Saturdays at 7:00pm and has become the most-watched show in its time period. Among his many interesting life experiences which include climbing Katahdin three times, parachuting and SCUBA diving, Bill was a bone marrow donor to a young girl who lives Michigan. He is also a Registered MaineGuide. Bill and his wife Pam reside in Cumberland. They have two children, Sam and Emily.

You can find Bill Green’s Maine on Facebook here: Bill Green’s Maine
