Jupiter & Ying Quartets

We happily welcome the Jupiter String Quartet back to the Festival, joining the Ying Quartet for this double-feature. The opening viola quintet is Mozart’s transcription of an earlier Serenade for winds; the string arrangement brings rich depth to this introspective work. Next, we’ll hear the sextet which opens Strauss’s final opera, Capriccio, frequently performed as a standalone concert work. Finally, no double-quartet program would be complete without young Mendelssohn’s Octet, allowing each performer to relish exuberant musical conversation and virtuosic counterpoint.

Jupiter String Quartet
Nelson Lee, Meg Freivogel, violin • Liz Freivogel, viola • Daniel McDonough, cello

Ying Quartet
Robin Scott, Janet Ying, violin • Phillip Ying, viola • David Ying, cello

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
String Quintet No. 2 in C Minor, K. 406

RICHARD STRAUSS

Brews for a Cause - Coastal Humane Society

Join us at Flight Deck Brewing on July 25 to enjoy a beer and support Coastal Humane Society – we will be donating 20% of all draft beer sales and 100% of all bar tips.

In addition to supporting a great cause, you will be able to meet some “alumni animals” – animals who were adopted from Coastal Humane Society and have happily found their forever homes. We might also have a surprise visit of some other friends!

More about Coastal Humane Society:
The Coastal Humane Society (CHS) is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization, animal shelter, and companion animal adoption agency founded in 1950 by a group of Brunswick citizens concerned with the welfare of the area’s stray animals. Beginning as a volunteer-run shelter in an old barn not far from where the current shelter stands, it is now one of the largest animal shelters in Maine with a staff of 20 (including our own veterinarian, Dr. Mandie Wehr) and over a hundred active volunteers. Since their founding 65 years ago, the Coastal Humane Society has cared for and adopted out tens of thousands of animals, and each one is spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, tested, and ready for a new home.

Jongen, Mazzoli, & Dvorák

A beguiling gem by Belgian composer Joseph Jongen opens this concert. Known principally for his contributions to organ repertoire, Jongen assimilated a range of European inspirations, studying briefly with Richard Strauss in Berlin, mingling with Fauré and d’Indy in Paris, and sojourning in Italy and England before settling as director of the conservatory in Brussels. Musical forces increase for Mazzoli’s cascading melodies in her Still Life with Avalanche, inspired by the death of a beloved cousin. Strings take over the second half of the program, performing Dvo?ák’s breakthrough Sextet, a composition which helped spread his fame across Europe.

Jupiter String Quartet

The centerpiece of the Jupiter String Quartet’s program is a new work by Canadian composer Kati Agócs, recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The new work is framed by two canonical quartets that each stretched the genre in their own ways. Beethoven deconstructs the classical four-movement form, opting instead for a radically integrated work, motivically dense and contrapuntal. Debussy, on the other hand, preserves a more traditional structure for his only string quartet, exploring new textural and harmonic frontiers.

Souvenirs – Art Show Opening

Thornton Oaks Retirement Community invites the public to the opening reception of Souvenirs, an exhibit of watercolors and oils by Frances Pratt Caswell, on Wednesday, August 1, at 4:00 p.m. in the Merrymeeting Room at 25 Thornton Way, Brunswick.

Caswell is a long time Brunswick resident, having been introduced to art during her days in Brunswick High School in the 1940’s. Following retirement from teaching English at Southern Maine Technical College, now Southern Maine Community College, she pursued her interest in painting with courses in the Continuing Education Department at Maine College of Art and in summer workshops with many artists including Janet Conlon Manyan and Evelyn Dunphy. She was for many years a member of Casco Bay Art League.

Caswell usually draws inspiration from the Maine landscape; however, for this exhibition she has turned back to the illustrated journals and photo albums

of travels she took in retirement with her husband, Forrest Caswell. Included in the show are scenes from Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, and South America. At home or abroad she is fascinated by the power and rhythm of water, quiet reflections on inland ponds, and cloud patterns on distant hills, mountains with Alpine glow or rising mist.

Souvenirs will be on exhibit from through September 28. After the opening reception, call the Thornton Oaks office at 373-4600 for best times for viewing.

Thornton Oaks Retirement Community is a homeowners cooperative and includes 46 cottages and 98 apartments nestled in 29 wooded acres in Brunswick. Thornton Oaks is affiliated with Mid Coast-Parkview Health.

To set the tone for it all is the bucolic pastorale which opens Debussy’s late Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp, one of a set of sonatas Debussy was composing at the time of his death.

Itamar Zorman plays Dvorák

We finish the season with characteristic panache, welcoming Itamar Zorman to the stage alongside the full Festival orchestra. Zorman, winner of the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition and recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, performs Dvorák’s String Sextet earlier this season (July 18). Now he brings his touch to Dvo?ák’s innovative Violin Concerto, composed just as Dvo?ák was beginning to explore integrating traditional Slavonic music into his own work. The exhilarating Finale will send us dancing off in Czech style until next summer!

Anxiety Support Group

Anxiety can be debilitating and take you away from the life you want to lead. I’m starting a free support group for those who want to get a handle on dealing with it. No commitment, just show up and let’s work through techniques and discussions and knowing that we are not alone.

This is a safe and nurturing environment. Don’t let fear of the unknown stop you from coming. Every single one of us has been there, we understand.
Every other Thursday evening at Life Balance Health Coaching Studio from 6:00-7 pm starting on July 12th, 2018.
