Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Disney’s Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets.
Inspired by the real-life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against powerful newspaper publishers. This timely and fresh fictionalized adaptation addresses age-old themes of social injustice, exploitative labor practices, and David-versus-Goliath struggles as the young learn to harness their power against a corrupt establishment.
This all singing, all dancing, high-energy show features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York” and “Santa Fe.”
Show times at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Call 207-725-8769 or visit www.msmt.org for tickets!

METRO BREEZ Express Bus Service between Portland, Yarmouth and Freeport is expanding to Brunswick.
Join us Thursday, August 24 at the Brunswick Maine Street Station
We will have a limited number of seats available to ride to/from the kickoff event.
FREE METRO BREEZ Express service
(PORTLAND, ME) – On Thursday, August 24, METRO BREEZ express bus service expands to Brunswick. The new route will feature commuter service between Portland, Yarmouth, Freeport, and Brunswick, with 14 daily weekday roundtrips and six on Saturday.
Greater Portland Transit District METRO launched METRO BREEZ in June 2016, as part of a three-year pilot project, with service between Portland, Yarmouth, and Freeport. In March 2017, the Brunswick Town Council joined the pilot program in its second year by voting to extend the service to Brunswick. The service is funded with federal grants and matching funds from Yarmouth, Freeport and, now Brunswick. Bowdoin College also pledged support for the project. The service has had a successful first year with approximately 2,200 boardings monthly.
After the vote to expand public transit service, Brunswick Town Councilor Sarah Brayman was happy about the decision to move forward. “I think it’s really exciting. I’m just thrilled by it.” Following the vote, public meetings were held in Brunswick, and in other communities along the BREEZ route, to discuss and plan several aspects of the expanded service.
METRO BREEZ features limited stops in each community for convenient, fast service between destinations. The route has five stops in Portland; three in Yarmouth; and three in Freeport. The Town of Brunswick stops are located on Maine Street; at Brunswick Maine Street Station; and at Bowdoin College, near Pickard Theatre.
The kickoff celebration for this new service will be held at Brunswick Maine Street Station, 16 Station Avenue on August 24 at 8:30 a.m. Following the brief launch event is an inaugural bus trip, leaving Brunswick at 9:20 a.m. heading south to Portland, with stops along the way in Freeport and Yarmouth. Opening remarks will be made by METRO Board President John Thompson (of Westbrook); Brunswick Town Councilor Sarah Brayman; Brunswick State Representative Matthea Daughtry; and Maine Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt. The public is invited to attend the launch event.
“With the added service to Brunswick, the success of the BREEZ continues to fulfill an important commuter service niche in the region. METRO is very excited to be partnering with the Town of Brunswick, ” said METRO Board President John Thompson.
The METRO BREEZ express service will be FREE following the service kickoff event on Thursday, August 24 and continue with FREE service Friday, August 25 and Saturday, August 26. After this introductory promotional period, regular one-way cash fare will be $3 and reduced fare (for seniors 65+, Medicare card holders and persons with disabilities) will be $1.50. Riders can pay as they go or purchase tickets in advance at the Brunswick Maine Street Station Visitor Center; the Bowdoin Book Store; and several other locations along the routes.
“The Brunswick Downtown Association is very excited to welcome METRO BREEZ to our community,” said Executive Director Debora King. “The addition of 14 daily round trips between Portland and Brunswick is good for employers, employees, visitors and folks just looking for convenient and safe travel options.”
Schedules; route maps; ticket sales locations; and information on how to use the transit system is available through METRO’s website at gpmetrobus.com or by calling METRO customer service at 207-774-0351. METRO riders can also plan their trips and access “real time” arrival information by using a smart phone app; the smttracker.com website; or via text. Each bus stop has a specific ID number.
METRO BREEZ complements and connects with Amtrak Downeaster rail service in Portland, Freeport, and Brunswick. METRO riders can transfer to/from the Brunswick Explorer, the local transit service for the Town of Brunswick. Every METRO BREEZ trip also serves the Portland Transportation Center (PTC), providing passengers with convenient transfers to the train or bus. Riders can easily connect to local METRO routes; Casco Bay Ferry service; the Portland Jetport; and other regional transit bus routes, including South Portland Bus Service; ZOOM – Shuttlebus; Lakes Region Bus; Concord Coach and Greyhound Bus.
An updated Regional Transit Guide, with new schedules effective for August 2017, is available at METRO’s downtown hub, the METRO Pulse at 21 Elm Street, on buses and other locations throughout the region.
METRO local service provides transportation to Portland, Westbrook, Falmouth and the Maine Mall area of South Portland. Greater Portland Transit District METRO is Maine’s largest public transportation carrier, with annual ridership of nearly 1.8 million.
