Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Disney’s Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets.
Inspired by the real-life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against powerful newspaper publishers. This timely and fresh fictionalized adaptation addresses age-old themes of social injustice, exploitative labor practices, and David-versus-Goliath struggles as the young learn to harness their power against a corrupt establishment.
This all singing, all dancing, high-energy show features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York” and “Santa Fe.”
Show times at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Call 207-725-8769 or visit www.msmt.org for tickets!

Maine State Music Theatre is committed to helping young audiences experience the magic of theatre by providing Theatre for Young Audiences performances each season. However, a standard theatrical experience may not always be accessible for children with social, cognitive, or physical challenges.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Anna-Maria Moggio Foundation, Maine State Music Theatre will create sensory-friendly performance of Alice in Wonderland during the 2017 season designed for families with children with autism or other disabilities that create sensory sensitivities.
The performance will take place in the 22 Elm Street Rehearsal Hall – a performance environment that is safe and accessible for children who may be uncomfortable in the theatre’s more traditional main stage setting at the 600-seat Pickard Theater.
The project – inspired by a 2016 successful pilot performance – gives the theatre the opportunity to demonstrate further its commitment to be an inclusive, supportive community providing theatrical experience for all patrons.
There is no admission fee for these events but reservations are required. Seating is limited. Call 207-725-8769 to reserve seats.
