Newsies

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Disney’s Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets.

Inspired by the real-life ‘Newsboy Strike of 1899,’ when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against powerful newspaper publishers. This timely and fresh fictionalized adaptation addresses age-old themes of social injustice, exploitative labor practices, and David-versus-Goliath struggles as the young learn to harness their power against a corrupt establishment.

This all singing, all dancing, high-energy show features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York” and “Santa Fe.”

Show times at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Call 207-725-8769 or visit www.msmt.org for tickets!

Tea With Harriet

Tea With Harriet: August 17, 2017

Bowdoin College is proud to present a monthly entertaining lecture series on the life and letters of Harriet Beecher Stowe. The event is held each third Thursday of the month from 1-2:30 pm at 63 Federal Street, the home of Harriet and Calvin Stowe and their children from 1850-52. The theme of the August Tea will be a series of stories, recreating the summer of 1882, when the lives of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry Ward Beecher, Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Austin Dickinson, and Martin Johnson Heade all intertwined in unusual ways. Due to the immense popularity of this program, reservations are now required and seats are filled on a first-come, first served basis. Please call 207-725-3155 to leave your name and the number of seats needed.

Stowe House guide Cathi Belcher will read some witty excerpts from The American Woman’s Home, a domestic science book Stowe co-authored with her sister, Catharine. Readings include excerpts from chapters such as “Good Temper in the Housekeeper,” “The Healthful Home,” “The Management of Young Children,” “Care of the Homeless, the Helpless and the Vicious” and others.

The event is free and open to the public. No reservations required.

Tea and light refreshments will be provided. For more information, call 207- 721-5059.
