Music on the Mall

Music on the Mall, Downtown Brunswick’s Summer Concert Series, presents FREE concerts Wednesday evenings at 6 PM throughout the summer on the Brunswick TownMusic on the Mall Brunswick, Maine logo Mall (Green- see map). Grab a blanket or chair, bring your family and friends, order a picnic dinner or dine at a local Brunswick restaurant, then relax and enjoy great music. FREE Admission.

August 23Maine State Music Theatre Night - Enjoy a variety of performers including The Taffetas!
August 30Three's Country - Country music

All concerts start at 6 PM unless except for Children’s Night (5 PM).
In the case of inclement weather, rain date performances will be held on Thursdays when available.

Over and Under at Points of View Art Gallery

Points of View Art Gallery presents Over and Under in July – two sides of the same coin yielding different perspectives.  14 Points of View Artists show interpretations of these perspectives in a range of media in the main gallery.  Jackie Melissas and Ann Slocum are Exploring the 3rd Dimension in the third floor gallery.  The second floor gallery hosts Barbara Snapp and her Images of IrelandReception:  Friday, July 14, 5-7 pm.   Gallery: 18 Pleasant Street;  9 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday.  FMI: povartistsmaine.com; 373-9300.

Grease

Dust off your leather jackets, twirl your poodle skirts! It’s Rydell High’s senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding “Burger Palace Boys” and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking “Pink Ladies”.

Head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high school romance of their “Summer Nights” as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through the unforgettable songs from the hit movie including “You’re The One That I Want,” “Grease Is The Word,” “Hopelessly Devoted To You,” “Greased Lightnin’” and many more.

So throw your mittens around your kittens and hand jive the night away with the show that’ll make you want to stand up and shout, ‘A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop, a-wop-bam-boom!’

Summer Dance at The Moving Company Dance Studio

This year’s 5-week summer dance session will run July 10 – August 12, and features our popular preballet, ballet/tap combo, ballet, modern and tap classes for ages 2 through adult. And new this summer, we are happy to be able to offer:

Hip Hop FUNdamentals! – Focusing on the basics of hip hop dance for dancers age 8-12. Students will learn about improvisation, popping, locking, breakdancing and other fundamental styles that make up hip hop dance culture. High energy and fun!

Making Dances – An opportunity for dancers age 8-12 to explore different choreographic concepts as a means to creating their own works. In-studio performance for family and friends at the end of the final class!

Newsies Jr – A high energy musical theater dance class for ages 8-12, featuring a final performance outside Bowdoin College’s Pickard Theater before Maine State Music Theatre’s August 9 production of Newsies!

Thornton Hall Community Concert

As part of the Community Concert series, students will engage with various audiences in non-traditional performance venues such as coastal resorts, libraries, community centers, care centers, breweries, and more. Through these opportunities and mentorship in outreach, students will widen their reach and identify entrepreneurial ways to interact and grow through music. Concerts feature a variety of traditional classical repertoire and are typically 45 minutes in length.

Meet the Author & Book Signing featuring Diane Schetky

Meet the Author- Diane Schetky as she shares her intriguing story and her book Taking Flight, Poems and others. Her writing is accessible, poignant, empathetic and sometimes biting and sometimes humorous.
When not traveling or writing, she enjoys serving as a docent at The
Bowdoin College Arctic Peary Museum leading tours for children.
She is a CHANS Hospice volunteer and facilitates bereavement
groups. She also facilitates a writers’ group at the retirement community
where she resides.

American Red Cross Blood Drive

Mid Coast Hospital will host a blood drive on Wednesday, July 26, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Mid Coast Hospital Café, 123 Medical Center Drive in Brunswick. Offered by the American Red Cross, the blood drive is open to all community members. Appointments can be made online by going to redcrossblood.org and using “MCH” as a sponsor code.

The Red Cross provides more than 40% of the nation’s blood supply to approximately 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide. The blood drives at Mid Coast Hospital are organized quarterly, helping to keep supply adequately stocked to provide for those patients in need.

Beethoven, Norman, and Schumann

This week the Festival welcomes Andrew Norman, named Musical America’s 2017 Composer of the Year. Norman’s work frequently demands unconventional techniques of performers, drawing inspiration from narrative forms, temporal distortions, and architecture. Indeed, in Frank’s House, Norman contemplates the residence of architect Frank Gehry, transporting the audience to Santa Monica, California. The evening also features Schumann’s Piano Quartet, composed in 1842, his breakthrough year of chamber music.
