The Theater Project of Brunswick, Maine is excited to continue their 45th Anniversary Season with the next production in a season of original plays by Maine playwrights. “The ANZACS: Lest We Forget”, will be a multi-media evening of story and song, onstage April 6 – 15, written by Michele Livermore Wigton and based on The Anzacs, 100 Years On by author Ted Egan. “The ANZACS: Lest We Forget” will tell the story of the beginnings of a formidable fighting force – the Australian New Zealand Army Corps – as well as the extreme conditions of war in the 20th century, and the effects of battle on the ANZACS and those who waited at home during WWI.
Ted Egan, listed among “Australia’s National Living Treasures,” has generously allowed The Theater Project to use his music, his words, and his family’s own history to produce this new work. Ted Egan has for 40 years been writing and recording songs, filming and writing about the spirit of the Australian people. “I come to this topic with a strong family connection and interest,” writes Egan. “My mother, Grace Brennan, had three brothers who volunteered to join the Australian Light Horse in 1914. Jack Brennan was killed at Gallipoli, Bob Brennan served three years straight in the horror of the Western Front. Martin Brennan went to the Middle East after Gallipoli, engaged in many conflicts, was briefly a prisoner of war, escaped, and rejoined his regiment. I wrote my Song for Grace to record, word for word, the story my mother told me when I was twelve.”
Three years ago, local businessman Sam Kelley – a huge fan of Ted Egan’s music for over 30 years – approached Michele Livermore Wigton, Theater Project veteran and playwright, with the idea for this work. A Vietnam veteran himself, Kelley believed that Egan’s music and his family’s story of war would make an incredible play. The Theater Project decided to commission the piece and with the help of Sam Kelley in Maine and Ted Egan in Australia, they will open “The ANZACS, Lest We Forget” on April 6th for two weekends. “Sam’s passion for the music has inspired us all and his love of America and the injustices of war has led to a beautiful relationship and meaningful play”, said Executive Director Wendy Poole.
“The ANZACS: Lest We Forget” runs April 6 – April 15. Performance times are Thursdays at 7:30 pm, Friday/Saturdays at 8:00 pm, and Sunday 4/9 at 2:00 pm (no Sunday performance on 4/16). All performance dates are Pay-What-You-Want, with a suggested price of $20, available online anytime at theaterproject.com or at 729-8584. The Theater Project is located at 14 School Street in Brunswick, and is a 501(c)(3) organization.
