Sweetest in the Gale presents "Baroque Beauties"

The Oratorio Chorale presents the rich and diverse music of 17th- and 18th-century composers with “Baroque Beauties” April 8–9 in Falmouth and Brunswick. Concerts take place Saturday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Falmouth, and Sunday, April 9, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Brunswick.

Sweetest in the Gale, the Chorale’s women’s chamber chorus, shares the contrast and brilliance of works by Tomàs Victoria, Giovanni Pergolesi, Claudio Monteverdi, and Baroque women composers Barbara Strozzi and Caterina Assandra.

The chorus will be joined by soloists Mary Sullivan, the Oratorio Chorale’s artist-in-residence, and Jenna Guiggey of St. Mary Schola.

“‘Baroque’ is synonymous with drama, emotions, and magnificence,” says Oratorio Chorale Artistic Director Emily Isaacson.

“Opera was invented during this period, and the theatrical flair resonated through all other art forms. Composers were interested in how they could use music to move the listener’s emotions. This music dances, soars and tugs at your heart strings.”

The chorus and soloists will be accompanied by a string quartet (two violins, a viola and cello) and organ continuo from the Maine Chamber Ensemble.

Create a Spiny Knotted Bracelet

Join our dear friend & bead artist Stephanie Sersich April 9 at The Mix! In the workshop, we’ll use floss and waxed linen to bind beads and other treasures into a bracelet.

The materials and methods provide an opportunity for self-expression—there is no pattern to follow, the beads can vary in size, color and shape. Each student in the class creates a bracelet different from the others’. The unusual materials and larger bead sizes (a nice change from the intricate “seed bead” work) seem to level the playing field for beginners and long-time beaders. Most students will complete the bracelet in class.
